JBL 4435 Restoration

The Package by APC has a massive bass line. It is always too loud on any speaker I play it on, but I love it.

I wish I could hear those. Expert work! Props to you and mech both!

Thanks!! The bass in that song is just tremendous, like getting kicked in the chest. I have used it on some subs and bottomed out the excursion, with some nasty popping noises as a result. The 4435s just laugh it off.

Thanks, John! Someone who knows me? I do know some of the local audio buffs; it's a fairly small circle here.

rvito, I do think the Radians sound a little smoother to me that the Tis; not sure though. I love how the have AL domes for smoothness and Mylar surrounds for durability; best of both worlds. I posted a review on the Parts Express listing for them

My new Radians arrived today and I installed them. What an amazing difference !

Sorry; I'd meant to reply earlier: that's great news that you like them; delighted to learn someone else enjoys the Radians. I think they sound terrific.

Playing some more tunes on the 4435s this evening; man do they set up a wonderful sound stage; like a big-screen sound experience.

Can something like a MC250 driver those speakers?

You got me thinking I'd like a bit more bass than my cornwalls.
Maybe a tad bit more imaging also.

I'll have to ask my oracle if 4435s are in my future : )

Funny, I have a thread on Macs and 4435s here:

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=663074

(The last few posts reveal a happy ending.) The consensus seems to be that one could get away with maybe 90 watts, but 200 is about right for optimal headroom without overdriving them. I'd guess a conservatively rated MC250 would be OK; at 96 dB sensitivity that's maybe 114 dB up close at 64 watts' output I guess?

Just saw the final product - you did it! Those look great. Now, you can sit back and relax and groove to the tunes.

I know this thread is a few months back now -

But I just noticed you said you painted the horns as well.

Did you do any work to them (fill, sand, etc..) before painting them?

I'm about to embark on my restoration, and my horns could use some work...

Thanks, you guys; sorry for the delayed reply!

CJ, the horns on mine had some very minor scrapes on the outside edges. As I recall, I gave them a very light sanding with 320 maybe, then wiped them down with denatured alcohol and lightly painted them with the Duplicolor auto trim paint that I like to use with JBLs. I compared them later with my 4430 horns and in my opinion, the finish is not quite OEM but it looks much, much better than OEM; it makes the OEM finish look very cheap and dried-out.

Hi Zonker,
Just picked up some 4435's and love them. Reading all your post has been very enjoyable and insightful! Thanks,
Bart

Looking great, Bart! Thanks for posting. I am about to start work on a new stereo cabinet and I hope to post updated photos of mine within a month or so. I'm still really enjoying them.

I'll be watching this. Your current cabinet is gorgeous! You must have something in mind even better, can't wait to see what's cooking!

Glenn

Thanks, Glenn! My stereo and LP cabinets didn't fit well in our new living room, so I gave them to a good friend, because he and his wife both really liked them. I have a somewhat more adventurous design in mind this time (combined LP and stereo cabinet) and I'm very curious to see how they turn out!

:D

And I painted the horns and baffles using Duplicolor Auto Trim paint (don't ask me why; it just looks great I think):

I also used new Radian diaphragms in the horns.

Hey Zonker!
Thanks a million for posting all of this detail.

I'm about to purchase a set of original L91 louvers for my 4333a s and I want to paint them to freshen them up. They are plastic and some of the paint is flaking off. Would you say that this Duplicolor Auto Trim paint would be a good application for these?

thanks again!

I think so; yes. It's a very flexible and forgiving paint with just a touch of sheen, and it's made for plastic parts. I love how it doesn't leave bands or run, if you use light coats.

Those lenses look like they come apart into individual layers, so it might be best to take them apart, lightly paint them and then press them back together, but too many coats might make it a very tight fit.

Awesome.
I'll give this a try.
Also thinking about refinishing the front of my 4430s one day and this post gives me motivation. The finish on your 4435s looks factory fresh.

Thank you!
