JBL 4435 Restoration

Real nice Zonk! Must feel great to have this project wrapped up. Now enjoy and start the search for the next project!

Thanks, everyone!! The next project is already on my workbench, courtesy of Bart: One tasty pair of 4301Bs, but they're painted black at the moment.

wweigle, thanks for asking: here are two threads on my Technics plinths:

Sweet! I assume you just veneered over the old? Were there any issues with the edges like at the horn panels where you can see two layers.

Great thread!

Very impressive work. I hope to have one myself someday.

Question about veneering - do you apply the new on top of the old, or does the old veneer have to come off first?

You've got to love a friend that hooks you up to get the whole thing started :thmbsp:

WOW those are just insanely awesome...

One of these days is like to try some charge coupled networks for my L300's after reading so many positive things. Do you think charge coupling is worth the extra effort and expense?

Beautiful job on the restoration!

They turned out very nice sir ! I am getting ready to add new veneer to mine. The 4435s are such an awesome sounding speaker.

Simply outstanding, Zonker!

I am really impressed with the way you you respect and honor the designer's intent while improving the final result.

These 4435s are an inspiration to those of us who love the high-end JBL Studio Monitors.

Well done!

Thanks, all! :D I really appreciate the kind words.

I did in fact veneer over the old veneer. I suspect the original panels came pre-veneered and it would have created problems to remove it. The edges look great, even up close; the paint sealed them nicely.

And yup; I agree that active subs can help even the best full-rangers. But I must say that, with something like two B380 passive subs built into these, their bass is the best I've ever heard in a full-range speaker; truly palpable.

Zonk, I'm just so proud of what you have done. It just looks great, and I'm sure Dave Smith (designer of the 4430/35) and Greg Timbers (4425, L300's and most of JBL's 43xx 3 and 4 way systems) would be proud too.

Of course, I knew you had some experience when I saw pics of your 4430's. I'm so glad we started talking about these projects because you've been able to take these classic JBL's back and then beyond factory finish.

With all the gear I've had, plus a professional career and then family medical problems, time to work on these just was never there. I'm so glad they ended up in the right hands. You are the most organized guy I know cause I don't know how you did all these, move your household to a new home, and keep up with all your work and driving.

However, what I am good at is finding stuff, and that's why I seem to keep ending up with more gear. I'll just have to keep enabling all you guys!
