DieselPhotos

Hi All,

Found these at the local dump at the weekend.. Seems a shame to have them crushed so saved and planning to restore.

Any advice would be great

Thanks Guys,

i think the intention is to keep them totally bog standard. Recondition everything that needs doing and run them as is. Little point is destroying a bit of history..

Perhaps add a sub maybe.... They are for home use, always fancied an old skool system....

Wonder how easy the internal electronics would be to update....

Taking all the speakers for testing over the next few days, guess it will be then when i decide what to do going forward

Trading the utility cabinet for a more traditional JBL looking walnut veneer monkey coffin would be a good move. A subwoofer is not optional since the 2206 simply won't do much below 60 Hz no matter you do to it. Plan for a crossover to the sub at 80Hz and you will be golden.

The crossover photo doesn't look right to me...need to find a proper crossover schematic and see what you have.

Good luck! Those are some great components to start with.

Thanks,

I've actually had an update of what they are.

They are in fact JBL 4726 (The European version)

I think the crossovers will be dead. What would you replace them with?

Here are a few more pics...

I'd go active with the miniDSP. Those cabs are probably very well built so you might think about making them pretty with veneer.

The MiniDSP is an active crossover that will take your input signal (CD and such) and allow you to change the crossover points, sloops etc. then it goes out to two amps. One for the woofers and one for the horn. It just allows you much more flexibility and venerability in your crossover. I've heard many people so that it cost too much but if you buy good parts for your passive crossover, that will cost too much too. Here is a link to their site. You can see by the site it is only 105 bucks U.S. so that ain't bad. You control it with your computer.

As mentioned on the LH site

http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/4825.pdf

These speakers appear to be bi-amp only; that is, no internal crossover. So keeping them bog standard would mean there is no internal electronics to update. Whatever is in there isn't stock, somebody has added a rudimentary crossover to avoid the added complexity of the whole bi-amp situation.

Read the spec sheet above. Notice how there are separate impedance listed for the LF and HF sections? Just above that, where it says "Two-way externally bi-amplified loudspeaker system" is another clue that whatever crossover is in there isn't supposed to be in there. Not saying it won't work, just that it's not the bog standard configuration.

No, the JBL 4726 was a totally different animal. However...there was a 4726A and 4726AP and the 4726AP used a passive crossover. Based on the resistors, you have a 4726A which is the biamp model using an external electronic crossover. The N4726A network provides some LF protection for horn but that is about it.

Building the 4726AP crossover shown on the attached spec sheet would eliminate the need for external crossover and biamping.
