Jbl C44 Paragons Info Please Please

Final chapter of Paragon

I thought I would let you folks know what happened to the paragon I purchased a few month's ago, One of the JBL experts here had advised me on the things that I should do if I wished to keep it and listen to it like , Replace the woofers with refoamed replacements as not to damage the originals as to maintain their value , use subitute xovers and a few outher things that added up to a couple thousand dollars or more . Plus the damage that it had would also cost a lot to repair. I live in a small house and wouldn't be able to really enjoy it plus I had to store it in an unheated shed at my buddies house, ALL these things led me to selling it on E-Bay, yes iI made a good profit on it but I really would have liked to kepted it, The sale was just compleated and I no longer own a Paragon. When I bought it I had every intent on keeping it but it got to be just too much, maybe I'll come across anouther one someday and things will be different , I can hope!!!! :tears: englissa
 
Oh well, Englissa, you at least came out of it with great memories of owning one of the icons of this industry for a while, plus you got lots of dollar$ to console yourself with now that it's gone.

All in all, you shouldn't feel sad! :)

hate to break it to you, but chances are, you'll never see another one in your life time......:no:
including myself, most of us here haven't even seen one in person. now, don't waste all the money drinking:thmbsp: you can certainly buy nice substitute - can't tell you which ones, but i'm sure they're out there.......
 
Personally, if I ever found a paragon, it would be flipped for profit as quickly as I could post the listing. I don't blame him at all for selling.

Same here. While it was a cool piece it's not for everyone and they take up a lot of room. If it wasn't englissa making the profits it would have been someone else. I hope you made a boat load on it. :thmbsp:
 
Takes up a lot of room and wasn't the pinnacle of sound quality. Great conversation piece for those who know audio. Ugly monstrosity to people who don't know audio.
 
It's kinda like finding a big rough diamond. It is valuable has hell, but you can't do much with it in the present state. I would have flipped it and gone on a cruise with the cash$

I got the feeling from reading the thread that the project was a little more than you were in a position to bite off. It would take months and a great deal of expertise to bring those back.
 
No harm, no foul!

An unusual piece and you can say you've owned one, which is more than most people can say. Doesn't mean much outside of the audio world though...

Yes I do realize this, I was very luckey to come across this one,and your right most likely I will never see one let alone have the chance to purchase one unless I get major rich and I dont for see this happing anytime soon,

Not at all true.....

Mine sounds wonderful and it is the center of my front living room. Almost everyone who comes into my home comments on how beautiful the Paragon is and marvels at the design. Even if they are not "audio gear" savy. They almost always request I play it then seem to really enjoy how it sounds. Upon being asked I have had to explain Richard Ranger's "Diffusion of sound" principle more times than I can count.

I always enjoy how people who have never owned or perhaps even HEARD a JBL Ranger Paragon seem so ready, willing and able to weigh in on the subject with their oh so informed opinions.:banana::banana::banana:
 
I just hope you took some of the money and bought some L-300s, or all of the $ and got a pair of 4355s, that's what I wudda dun.:D

You see, i've shown people pictures of the paragon and jokingly told my wife I was going to get one for a sideboard in our dining room. Neither her, my parents or her parents thought it was very funny. I'm sure there is a very distinct minority of the public that would like the design, thats bound to happen. I honestly can't think of a single person I know outside of AK that would like the design. Everyone close to me thinks i'm crazy to have speakers larger than 2x2x2...inches. So...it is 100% accurate in my case, obviously it's not in your experience.

I don't need to hear one to *know*, unequivocally, that the Paragon doesn't represent the pinnacle of sound reproduction.

BTW: My Paragon was made in 1957 so its more a 50s modernist design.

For the record, I don't deny it's an icon, and I don't deny it could sound good. It uses nice components. I do doubt that anything more than a small fraction of people (outside of collectors) would find it anything other than huge and most likely a design oddity in the best scenario. Conversation piece, absolutely. But there are a lot of things that would qualify as conversation pieces. I will admit that I missed out on my one opportunity to hear it, but a local owner of L200Bs, L300s, and some L250s wanted to add a paragon to his collection. He passed on it and commented that he thought the L300 was a much better sounding speaker. Who knows if it's true, but I tend to have similar taste.

Hey Dave,

Did he happen to comment on L300 vs L250 vs 250Ti?

My memory, from 30 years ago, of the L300 was that is was a beautiful but marginal speaker not deserving of it's footprint. The L200 was not that deserving and I can't recall the L250. Further, I don't think I ever heard a 250Ti, but would love to..
 
Heck, I'd love a Paragon -- just need to get a new place if I did. :D Never heard one (most folks haven't), but I find it hard to imagine a statement piece by JBL sounding bad. Would make about as much sense as if Ferrari had made a four-cylinder F40...
