JBL L300/136a Help

I presume this is when reconing the 2205s or what speaker are you reconing with 2235 kits?

I'm very happy with the (measured and subjective) response of the 136H reconed as a 2235 w/ the original kit and massring. I suspect that there are motors and applications that are not as well suited to a C8R2235 re-cone so responses should be specific.

This is with ANY of the MANY possible basket/magnet assemblies that share the common architecture, and there are lots.
 
So, ... you're saying that re-coning the 2235H with the full C8R2235 kit (which includes the mass-ring) is a bad idea and it should be reconed as a 2225?
 
It gets better midrange response without the mass ring lugging it down, almost +3dB at 1kHz, and Fs goes up a little 2 to 3Hz or so

It makes me wonder why, of all the variations of drivers/kits JBL made over the years, why the 2235 was the only one with a mass ring and the 2234 was only used in the 4435

Or in the case of the 4435's, where one woofer only goes up to 100Hz, should keep the mass ring 2235, the other
full range 0-1,000 hz woofer would work better with out the mass ring 2234 .

The 4435 was spec'd the have both woofers as 2234H. The .pdf is too large to attach here, evidently.

Also you get almost 2db more eff. It is listed also as a last replacement driver for the L200 with the LE15B
 
These days pop a 2216 into the L300 and be happy.

The mass ring was implemented to lower the bass operating range in the 4430 , which it did but at the expense of midrange articulaton. The 2234 existed only in the 4435 but is jut a 2235 without the mass ring.
A 2225 reconed with a 2235 kit without the mass ring is a 2234.
I have 2235's and built a home brew knowing full well that the MF is compromised by the mass ring so I organised my horn to play lower , crossing at 600Hz ish. Much better clarity.
AFIK after the 2235 the mass ring disappeared and JBL went to specific cone mass loading with Aquaplas on the back of the cone. As a result the deadweight was not concentrated near the voice coil and hence the MF was more accurate.

Yes, a mass ring-less 2235 is a 2234. I DIY'd a pair of cabs, with very similar internal volume and port tuning as a JBL L-300. I reconed a pair of 2205 alnicos with 8CR-2235 and (im a bass freak), having a parametric eq, i eq the bass generously and, the mass ring will very rarely, hit the center pole piece. It is frustrating, i know i'm part of the problem, but the mass ring is too much weight.

That's why the B380 and B460 subs used the BX63 as a filter for the extreme lows. BTW, you don't need the mass ring to bottom out a JBL woofer with heavy bass. Given enough deep bass, they will all do it with a loud "clank."

I really like the deep bass too now that I have speakers that can deliver it.. Quite addicting! But I have one LF driver over-extension story I'll share and then let you guys get on with the drivers in question. My L200's, when I first got the 2216Nd1's in them, and was setting up the DSP after biamping, I was fine tuning by manually changing PEQ's and did a very very dumb thing, I forget the frequency, but I was trying to put in a -8db gain, and I simply forgot to put the - sign in there. I am not sure if it was some sort of LF feedback with the mic or what, but OMG! After entering that, before I did that next frequency sweep, instantly I thought the house was hit by something... big! I have 1/4" plate tinted glass on top of the L200 cabs that are stuck down with silicone self adhesive spots. They normally don't slide around or move. Anyway, after that misstep one had almost hit the floor, was teetering, and the other one was displaced as well and slid back 6 inches or so. I managed to hit the volume on my preamp very fast, but left me 'shaken' in more ways than one, and since then very watchful of what I was entering for PEQ's.. Appeared to be no damage to the drivers, but must have "broke them in" in the second or so they were maxing out! Lesson learned.. :yikes:

Over the years JBL used mass rings in probably more than 8 models. Here are a few 135A 124A,H 2203A,H 136A,H 2231A,H
Others if they were not Aquaplased on the back were 121A,H 122A 126A

Humm... My 2235's are AlNiCo's so i'm not sure?. The AlNiCo magnetic structure (the ''pot''), is very deep. Maybe with the ferrite versions? since they didn't have a bumped-back back plate?. IDK, i'm just assuming... I was pretty sure the mass ring itself, was bumping into the center pole piece?. I had the mass ring epoxied as far as possible out on VC edge. Could it be the epoxy bead around the spider then?.

At one time I was using a 130A (not D130) as a sub and would run into that situation occasionally. They bottom with a "clank" and no ring. And the 130A is a deeper basket/coil area than any cone that can be put into a "D130" basket including the 2205 and the 2235.

As are mine. I put 2235 cones on AlNiCo 2205 baskets. T/S parameters are like the 2235 as confirmed using Woofer Tester-2.
