JBL speakers are they really that good?

Actually several other speaker manufactures used them. It was quite fashionable by JBL's competitors in the late 70's and early 80's. to provide the JBL "look", even if it didn't necessarily help that particular speakers sound.

The acoustic lens was primarily used on horns with a fairly narrow disbursement to widen it. Nothing more, nothing less. If the system you listened to used horns it already had adequate dispersion. The horns used by Westlake, for example do not, and that's why they don't use them. Hope this as well as the links provided help.

Daaang man, give up the Regency to someone who doesnt have that many JBL's man!!:D and who needs one to have stereo.
 
Nice collection of JBL's there C.B. Are you planning to add some Hartsfields and Paragon's to complete your collection?:D
 
Cactus Bob looks like a very avid JBL collector, in contrast to my collection of vintage Infinity's. But I have to give his JBL collection credit he has a very nice collection. It would be interesting to have a comparision listening reveiw of some of the top of line JBL's with good gear behind them to top of the line Infinity's with equally good gear behind them.

One thing I don't understand, is why AK doesn't have a manufactor link for the JBL brand, they do for the Infinity speakers, and some other less popular than JBL brand. I know that you can't have a thread for every manufactor but JBL's certainly have a huge support fan of loyal owners.
 
Out of all of Catus Bobs speakers I think those slanted ones maybe L250s are quite nice. Which one do you like the most Mr. Bob?
 
Good point KB . JBL.com has everything there including current product and legacy product support . They are both owned by Harmon intl. You can't link to Harmon intl. from the Infinity site but you can link to Harmon intl. then all the other brands from the JBL site ? go figure would be a good addition . +1 there. Only infinity Speakers I`ve had came in a 99 dodge P.U. it had an infinity Stereo as well that was the premium offering that year. I`ve had 2 new GMC 03,and 06 pickups since then the infinity system in the Dodge was way better .

That's easy. Lansing heritage already fills that market on the web. Secondly, there is danger in splitting off the forums even further. If there were a separate forum for every popular brand, it would effectively kill the speaker forum.

Thanks Ken, the 250ti's are definitely the best sounding out of the bunch. I really didn't search out JBL's specifically but I was at the right place at the right time it seems when I scored most of these. I recently snagged my first Infinity's, Quantum 2's which need some work but are in excellent condition cosmetically and should be an interesting contrast. I also have some ESS AMT 3 Rock Monitors which I really like also. The 250ti's work well in large rooms like mine and require a lot of power to make them sing. I need more room lol.

Funny I am always out looking for good speakers, and never find any JBL's, guess everyone already grabbed them. As far as your listening room, it looks quite large enough, you might need a side room so you can put all those big JBL's on furniture dolly's so you can roll them out and roll them in when your rotating them. I have three pairs of the QLS-2's I find them to be a great little Infinity speaker, probably not as forward as the JBL's but very refined and detailed sounding speakers, with good bass. They were my first pair of Infinity speakers, got them for the auction site had them shipped from California to Florida, did my first refoam job as I had never refoamed a pair of speakers, and have them currently powered by a pair of SAE 2400L amps, bi amped. I really like the way they reproduce strings, violins, cello's, and female voices. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have mine. In the mean time I will always keep my eyes for a big pair of JBL's, as I don't really care for small speakers, not that they don't sound good, I just love the looks of a really big set of speakers full of drivers!

Well I guess you would know! I would hate to split forums up any further. This is a really fun site, and I spend way to much time here. If I ever can stop finding good deals on audio equipment I need to resubscribe, as I think this site is well worth everyone becoming a subscriber, I don't know when my subscription ran out but for quite a while I was pretty much roughing it withou a connection in a country house that I just barely had electric in. Still only have electric in less than half the house, but than it takes a while to wire old historic homes that have not been lived in for half a decade.
 
Hey guys, I've been watching the thread and it's interesting to say the least. First off I have to say that I have little knowledge and first hand experiance with JBL's. My first set just recently came to me in a deal I posted about awhile back, some 4311B's out of a broadcasting studio. They are very nice I have to say, although I had to replace one tweeter and woofer in one of the cabs. I normally deal with Klipsch and Dynaco's so this was a bit out of my norm. I have to say that I'm impressed with the sound and quality all around. Granted the other models that I have in use are my Klipsch Chorus and the A-50s from Dynaco, so it's a very nice contrast among them all. I for a fact like that JBL used really well made parts, as I tore into the cab to replace some of them. It's nice to see that quality was not in short where I've seen it before in others. Just my 2 cents, but wanted to comment on the explosive thread topic hehe

If you really want to hear those 4311b's at their best....put on some good 70's rock like early Doobie Brothers or Eagles. Make sure you have lots of clean power, they can take it!

Toulouse Street would provide some good examples.

I can vouch for the excellence of the 250Ti's. A good buddy has a pair and they do EVERYTHING well. In addition, as good as they look in the photos they look far better in person.
 
As my old Dad would say about beer - " there is no such thing as bad beer - some is just better than others." Kinda reminds me of JBL speakers.
 
I gave my JBL L100s to a friend when I bought my Infinity RSIIIa. At the time (early '80s) I was under the possibly mistaken impression they had no bass response below 50 hz. True I never heard sub 50 bass, but nearly all of that in retrospect was due to the pop music records I owned having no deep bass content. What is the low bass extension of the L100?
 
I recently bought L300 Summits and a vintage SS setup.

I chose the L300's because;

1. I knew it they were made in USA (100% USA - not just a sticker on the box)
2. This forum spoke so highly of them.
3. Price - powerful, highly recommended, made in USA, on ebay for $2600

Was a leap of faith as I never heard them or any other L300's - except for some pretty bad youtube videos.

The sound is amazing, the only thing I can compare it to is a short audition with some very, very expensive unknown brands setup in a local hifi store.

I think my setup sounds much better at 1/5th the price.

Plus they look cool compared to most of today's skinny tower designs.
