JBL Summit Speakers Online Auction in Las Vegas

I need some advice. There is an online estate sale here in Las Vegas. This one is pretty upscale. Up for sale are two JBL Summit speakers. Not much of a picture to show, I can visit the site one day before bidding ends to evaluate to make sure they are in good shape--they probably are. I see that these are the Holy Grail of vintage speakers. Right now they are at about $200 for the pair. The end date for bidding is still 12 days away. Unless I'm missing something, it looks like these can go for anywhere from 2k to 4k for the pair. Thoughts on what a good price might be? I doubt I would keep them in the unlikely event I win them. And yet it sound like they are big and heavy, so I'm not sure I could ship them. I would note that this estate has them listed separately, and not even right next to each other--one is listed, then some thing like towels, bookcases, etc., then the other one is listed. In my experience sometimes these online auctions can yield some crazy-low prices, other times the market is pretty efficient. Well, let me know! JBLSummitSpeakers.JPG

View "Ebay "Completed Sales", add them up(sales/asking prices), divide and get an average price.
 
well you've just broadcast the auction so wont be long and the prices will be moveing northward.Deals on JBL high end models are few and far between and id expect them to sell for a good dollar as they are a desireable speaker

If it takes one Google search to find them with eleven-days left on the auction, then there's not much hope for keeping this under your hat. Already seven bids on each, so that's enough to make a horse race.
What kind of stupidity has these set up as two separate lots?

If this is considered an "upscale" auction, they do their clients no service with some of the worst photography I've ever seen.

Probably great speakers, but Holy Grail, not in my mind. In JBL world, holy grail has a much higher ladder, with a number of rungs to go.
 
Ha! I knew someone would eventually dispute the "Holy Grail" designation. But if you limit "vintage" to pre-1980, and ignore the professional models, they're definite contenders, along with Paragons and Hartsfields. JBL named them Summits for a reason.
 
When I think of Holy Grail and JBL in the same sentence I do think of Everest, and their big blue faced monitors. Hey if were thinking of "Summits" who can argue that the summit of Mt. Everest would be the holy grail of summits! ;)
 
I appreciate all the feedback--probably too rich for my blood, I will definitely watch the auction with interest now!

The L300s were my holy grail for over thirty-years. If I hadn't run into a pair of 4345s, I'd probably still be interested in the L300 or 4333. You can do better within the JBL family, but they're pretty damn good as they are!
 
Since the speakers are both in built in alcoves, the sellers just mark them as individual lots and move on. Imagine if the first is sold and the other becomes a bidding war, so sometimes it makes more for the estate, which is the whole reason for the auction.

However, You can't see the condition of anything except the fronts so caveat emptor for the cabinets. As for the bidding, so far there are only two bidders and one bid up the proxy bids. I expect there will be more of both. Since this isn't ebay, one needs to understand the bidding costs and rules of this auction house.

As the OP seems to want to leave the thread up, it becomes a testament to the power of AK as a notification site and attracting interested parties, some who want to observe, some who'd like to own, and many who want to flip or part these out for profit. So it goes.

Heh, remember, there's a full thread and owner of a pair of refurbished and tweaked JBL 4333s that says they (not the very similar L300) are THE most accurate of all JBL speakers, vintage or later modern, even better than any 4-way JBL Pro or Consumer model, or more recent JBL 3 way models like the Everest II using highly evolved materials, engineering, and techniques developed since the late 70's, not to mention the engineering skill, experience and hearing of Greg Timbers, et. al., who further evolved so many of JBLs best designs.

But many many do like what they hear in the L300 and similar JBL designs.

I get where your coming from but just because someone had a pair of speakers that they liked for a long time in my mind doesn't make them holy grail material. In my mind holy grail is something that is out of reach for almost everyone. L300's are not that uncommon, I see them for sale quite often and quite often for less than 3 or 4 thousand dollars, which really is not that much money in todays economy. Most people if they really wanted a pair of them could write a check for that amount and buy them, or they are not very well off might have to put a stash together for a while. Holy grail material to me is something out of reach of most all but the most well, speakers like one can see when going to higherFi 's webpage.
