I think the warmth of the McIntosh amplification would mate well with JML's Beryllium tweets.

I'm hoping that's the case... otherwise, I may have to consider ... <shudder> ... tubes.

After living with them for a while, I must say they're the best small speakers I've ever heard. Great detail, very flat, and in the room, their useable bass clearly goes down to 30-35 Hz. The Beryllium tweeter is a terrific unit.

They're too damn heavy to lug home for a direct comparison with the Pipedreams (hardly fair), but memory tells me they're not that far apart except in deep bass and imaging.

Now, to experiment with amps, etc...

Haven't changed a thing yet, so they're still being driven by my teeny weeny Arcam Solo, but I'm now prepared to admit that they do some things better than my main speakers.

The L&Rs have the same drivers as in the Grand Utopia Be except for the 15" subwoofer, and the 10" woofer is on the side. I'd like to try a pair of the big dogs now, as these juniors have really impressed me... well, of course there's that price problem.

Thanks for all the comments here. I'm going to start with the Mc 352 then see what I can borrow to try. In a small town, demo gear is hard to come by!

Very nice speakers David, always wanted to hear a pair of those.

Probably a great candidate for good tubes and the virtual point-source of the D'Appolito driver layout should make for killer imaging.

That pic reminds me of some of the old B&O speakers that were just mentioned in another thread here at AK.

They had that same "top and bottom angled together" look to them.
