JOKER

libertycaps

Analogue "AAA" vinyl.
Thumbs up! Caught the 10:30pm show last night. It was about half full. Haven't liked a movie this much watching in the theater since 13th Warrior. (Yeah, i don't get out much...)

And yes, it's gonna tick off the easily offended. Oh, well. That's life...

This sounds worth seeing. I like the idea of something being made that is more of a character study and less popcorn Marvel endless shiny-cheesy special FX and chiselled actors in spandex.

Of all the Hollywood takes on the Batman & related comic book logos, JOKER struck me as the most intellectually honest and least cheesy of the lot.
If you know your history, i found many parallels with the events of the Summer of 1977 in NYC. Yet another tangent to potentially pursue beyond the comic book based stuff this fine film evokes.

Director inspired by Network and Taxi Driver. It's just a movie folks.

SPOILER ALERT:
Much of the non-realistic/over the top naughty stuff (except the subway & ex co-worker murders) is delusional fantasy from a jailed criminally insane character. That said, i'm no DC Batman/Joker mythos expert. Would need to refer back, but this topic great conversation debate grist....

Do you want to watch sincerely disturbing films? Might i suggest 2010's A Serbian Film and/or 2008's Martyre? Those will give you nightmares for weeks.
I would not suggest watching either for anyone under the age of 18 at the very least. ~30 years if you are easily upset.

I'll second your advice re: Martyrs (2008). I wasn't prepared for what that was, but I liked it and even keep a copy.

A Serbian Film (2010) I have also a copy but have yet to give it a spin. Maybe I will, soon...

Don't think i'll ever watch A Serbian Film again. It's gut-wrenching painful. Makes JOKER look like vintage Disney's Cinderella.

A Serbian Tale is one messed up movie. A movie like that would never be allowed to be made due to its content.
While we're on this topic of disturbing films the Girl Next Door is another. I was messed up for like a week after watching that.

I'm interested in seeing the Joker movie - I like dark movies if it's done realistically vs violence just for the sake of violence. I'd rather see a dark, realistic movie that makes you think rather than a cliched superhero movie.

However, some movies that have a reputation for being sadistic and over-the-top violent/cruel, I have zero desire to see. Things like that can't be unseen, and I prefer not to put such things into the old memory bank. So A Serbian Film, Cannibal Holocaust, Salo. . .films of that type. . .not for me.

When I was a young teenager in the late 70's/early '80's, we'd sometimes watch horror film marathons on cable - Friday the 13th and the like. Those were fine - not really realistic - more cartoonish in their execution. But one year they put Last House on the Left into the mix, and that movie was pretty disturbing at that age.

I’ve done allot of reading on the new movie JOKER, the director is taking the grungy dirty look of 1980’s New York as a backdrop and the personality of an unstable loner that thrives on revenge in a society that disregards others. The characters breaking point is when he is beaten by a small group of young financial elites and when the rich impede and destroy all known infrastructure causing JOKER to loose mental health counseling and medication. The character of JOKER has little to do with D.C.’s JOKER character as the director literally takes the character of JOKER down the rat hole of desperation. The movie tends to parallel modern day societies destructive loners that have been active public shooters, the breakdown of social infrastructure and the contempt that those that have more, have for others that have allot less.

Hmmm. Well, maybe this is more than "just a movie" after all. "More than just a movie" talk more meant for preternatural art. JOKER is def a movie one needs to see more than just once to really "get" and fully understand. It's destined for Cult Movie status at the very least already. I'll prolly buy the Blu-Ray.

My friend Janice saw The Joker over the weekend, said it was pretty good (but she likes this type of movie). The talk here of disturbing movies brought this one to mind, mostly because of the possibility of such a thing actually happening....

Edit: guess I should type something before clicking Post Reply... oops...

Disturbing huh. About a decade or more ago I watched a movie called Vulgar, a production from some less talented buddy of director Kevin Smith. It involved a failed clown who gets beat up, and eh... worse. Reminds me a bit of this Joker plot. An all-around what-the-heck fest which has permanently put me off any clown films, PERIOD.
