Just bought a 1961 Thorens TD-124

A few nights ago I drove up to New Hampshire and bought a custom layered baltic birch plinth from bob06. Besides adding more mass, it also looks terrific, much like a vintage Ortofon plinth:

Do you notice any diffrence in sound?

I knew that question would come up.

It's hard for me to say with certainty, since I only had the Thorens up and running for a couple of days before I put it in the birch plinth, so I was just starting to get to know it. I've also been trying out different cartridges, so that further confuses thing.

It definitely sounds superb with the replacement plinth and it is much heavier. Rumble is a non-issue.

I like its appearance a LOT more than the original walnut plinth. Visually, it really enhances the TD-124's inherent elegance IMO.

Thanks again for making it available at such an affordable price! It was a real pleasure meeting you and seeing your own stunning TD-124.

Thanks, It was a pleasure for me as well meeting you. They do look nice all dressed in black. You have to change your Avatar now. :D

Looks great! Too bad the arm board wasn't a little wider to position the tonearm a little more accurately.

Black always sounds better than brown, categorically. My Fortes and the base of my Zen Triode Select are the only brown items in my room, and it's (eliminating brown) been the best tweak I've tried. Your psychoacoustic tax dollars at work, as they say! :D

Had Magnepans in both black and the original "white". yep, the black 3.6's sound better than the white MG1's
