The good news is that it's not in the power amp section. When set to mono, the output of the L & R preamp outputs is combined, and the same signal fed to both amp channels. As you get sound out of both speakers, that tells you both amp channels are fine.
As it's in the pre-amp, of course the absolute first thing you need to do is clean all of the controls. There are several thousand posts in this forum detailing exactly what to do and how to do it using DeOxit contact cleaner. Have you tried operating all of the controls (especially things like Tape Monitor switches and filter switches that rarely get used) to see if you can make any noise at all in the left channel? Once you've got all the switches and pots cleaned we can re-evaluate.

At least the power amp is okay. First what you need to do is clean the controls with Deoxit.

Intermittent is good, although intermittent faults can be a bitch to trace down. It means that it's probably either an oxidation (cleaning) issue or a bad solder joint. It could be other things, but there's a 95%+ chance it's the abovementioned items.
