Kansas City Area Get Together

jaymanaa

RIP 1961-2018
Hi All, I was thinking it would be fun to meet some of the KC area AKers in person and listen to some different gear. I would be happy to host a weekend type get together. My place (humble as it is) is located in Gardner, which is about 30 minutes or so South of Kansas City. I could have the wife fix up some snacks and such, and get some brew in the pink fridge in the man cave. I've got some tube stuff, and a couple different pairs of speakers, and if a couple others bring some gear stuff, we could make a good day of just checking stuff out. I've recently been bitten by the SS bug, and would love to hear some different stuff. If anyone is interested we could figure out a date that works best. It's just me and the wife here, so I'm very flexible. Thanks, Jay

Hi Jay, thanks for getting the ball rolling. Let's get something on the calendar before it snows or something. A Saturday or Sunday afternoon? I can bring a six of Boulevard. Doug

Maybe some of us from Iowa and Neb could make it?

That would be great :thmbsp: As far as the date, I'm open any weekend except for Thanksgiving of course. Sooner the better works for me. Does anyone have a weekend that won't work, or any suggestion for a weekend? Like I say, I'm very flexible. Jay

I'll do my best to be there, Sat. work best for me. I can bring out a SX-950 that Echo re-capped for an SS example. I'd love to hear some tube stuff.

OK, Looks like maybe the 11th or 18th maybe. I think Saturday is good in case some out of the town guys want to make a two day road trip (I'll just be hanging out on Sun. too). I would love to hear a SX 950 that EW has been into. :thmbsp: I've got some JBL Dorians that would probably match up pretty good to it. My music selection is fairly "focused" :D so everyone should probably bring some favs. If anyone needs tubes tested, feel free to bring them. Oh, One other thing I've allways wondered about is fancy cables, if anyone would like to bring some. Just let me know if anyone has any special needs or concerns, and which day you all want, Jay

Jay, this is a really good response so far. Most of you who replied have hundreds of postings in these forums, and here I am with fewer than ten. So I guess that makes me the great unknown in the group. I've been spending too much of my time in the Audio Asylum, I guess.... I have the same handle in the Asylum.

Saturday or Sunday still seems workable, and an afternoon meet would allow drive time for someone a ways out from KC. For an in-town guy like me, Gardner is...way out there. Sometimes in the Summer I ride to Gardner on Saturday mornings on my bike with a group of like minded cyclists, and get back to PV by early afternoon. It's about sixty miles round trip.

I guess I'll bring the Dynaco mono amps. I think they are pretty cool looking. (Not ready to be plugged in yet, though.) But talk about retrovintage!

We should think about having some reference recordings :music: if we are going to do any comparisons. Here's a start:

Abbey Road, Beatles
Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
Avalon, Roxy Music
Graceland, Paul Simon

I consider these to be audiophile-approved, generally well known and easily available on vinyl as well as CD.

It looks like I'll need to bring a twelve pack at the rate the responses are running. :beerchug:

Doug

I just ordered a new copy of Abby Road from Soundstage Direct. Maybe it will be here in time. We need to get those Dynacos on the Variac. :thmbsp:

I'd love to make it, but I'm working overtime and third shift to boot...

I wouldn't be able to get away till after Dec 9th...

Jay the 18th would be best for me, the 11th is a bit iffy. I also have some small B&O's that I have contiuned to impress me with everything I put up aginst them. Another opinon or two would be intersting.

Sounds like fun!

Unfortunately I've got something going that weekend.

If Glenn feels like dragging it and someone has a pre-amp you guys could take my recently rebuilt Spec 2 thats at Glenns for a test drive. This one is pumping out 350 wpc in 8Ω

The dates not set in stone yet. Maybe you Iowa fellas could ride together. I've got a couple pre-amps, but I don't think I have any speakers that would give her much of a work out. That's a whole bunch of juice. Sure would be nice to have you Iowa folk make it. Jay

Jay, I'm still okay with Saturday afternoon the 11th or the 18th, so it's your call. I appreciate that you have offered to host a get-together and work out the details. :thmbsp:

I have a bunch of different components around the place, so let me know what sort of electronics you'd like me to bring. For that Pioneer power amp, I wonder if a Kenwood L-07C pre would be a good partner? :scratch2: In my limited experience, I have found that a preamp has a lot more effect on sound than a power amp. So much for sweeping generalizations! YMMV.

You also mentioned trying out cables; do you mean ICs or speaker wires, or both?

A side note on comparisons. Some changes to an electronics system produce immediate noticeable effects, but so many changes are subtle and confusing at first; it takes a while (fifteen minutes or even 24 hours) to sort out if any change is an improvement--or just a difference. And some changes are only improvements with certain sources or program material! It goes on and on.

Now that I've figured out how to use the smilies, I feel almost like a regular AKer :)

Doug

Lets see, a day with tubes and DIY speaker systems among other things... If I was any closer I would be there for sure! I guess I will have to settle for the pictures.

If EW has my Sony TAN-8550 VFET amp finished he is welcome to take it along to demo VFETs for you guys. Please don't blow it up. As a native of Wichita I wish I could join you.
