I think he is asking which to get? Answer depends on what amp he is running and what kind of sound he is looking for.

you are probably right and incase you are, my advice is to have the balls to trust your own ears and decide what you like, rather than trust what someone else thinks.

i would go for the yamahas but if they have problems you will never get spare parts. spare parts for kef are very very common

in terms of value the yamahas are a much better bet but for the love of god make sure they are working perfectly.

those kefs go for very little in the uk

Around here the prices are close, the Kefs might bring a bit more. I have a pair of the Kefs, have not had the pleasure of hearing the Yamaha yet. The 107 can be stunning. Both have great reputations but are wildly diffrent. You know what that means: buy both!

If you like a smooth, balanced presentation and listen to a lot of jazz or classical, get the KEF's and don't look back. If you like are more energetic, in-your-face presentation and prefer rock and roll/disco/C&W, then it's the Yamaha's.

For my money, I'd take the KEF Ref 107's any day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

I have a friend with the KEF's and they sound huge. The strength is in the big midrange and overall largeness of the sound. They do not image particularly well, but I find them to be very very enjoyable, and also very impressive.

The Achilles Heel of the KEF's is the T33 tweeter, which should have been put to sleep a long time ago. It's a good, but not great tweeter. I've had probably a dozen of them, for the simple reason that they are ubiquitous throughout the KEF line and I've owned a lot of KEF speakers. At one point I think I had 8 of them lying around. Everything else about the 107 is exceptional.

That being said, I would still take the KEF's over the Yamahas. I find the sound of the 1000's unforgiving, to put it mildly. Too analytical. The KEF's blow them away in terms of bass response and sound stage. The Yamaha's on the other hand have a superb mid range. You'll not find either speaker a bargain, unless you get real lucky. If you want a really interesting and exciting speaker, check out the Yamaha NS 80X. Carbon fiber composite 12 in. woofers, ported design. My buddy has the only pair I've ever seen. I think they sound wonderful. Another great alternative to the Yamahas is the Mitsubishi Diatone line. The particular model I've heard is on par with the NS-1000. 12 in. acoustic suspension woofers, 4-way with metal dome mid, tweeter and super tweeter.

Have both; KEF 107 now in storage. These need a large listening area and a powerful high current amp to sound its best. Great soundstage and presence and dynamics as far as British speakers go with heart pounding bass. Repairs to woofer surrounds will be expensive so make sure. NS 1000s in a class by itself: quick, accurate and perfect match with tubes. This is my daily listen with a Dynaco ST35 and Eico HF85 but alternates with my Spicas.

Considering the price difference between these puppies, I'm somewhat surprised there's a serious argument at all. Apparently Yamaha made a pretty good sub-$1000 speaker!
