KEF Folks - What Model Should I Start With?

104/2 without equivocation

If you're still not convinced after a couple dozen people said the same, then look for a set of the Reference Model One, Two, Three, or Four. And don't be scared of the Uni-Q drivers. The newer (as in newer than 1990) Uni-Q drivers work just fine and usually don't have issues.

With the 300's I figured adding a sub, but the more I think of it, the less appealing that is.

I di find a decent set of RDM Twos with stands, but they get bad reviews.

The Q300's have really good bass as they stand. Read my review of them playing Copeland's Billy the Kid. It really depends on the type of bass you want. I have heard lots of systems with exaggerated bass that is boomy and not defined. The Q300 is rated to 42 Hz, but getting to 30 or 20 Hz cleanly is a step that really takes a lot of work, so be careful what you wish for!

Not too hard, just get some 107's :)

Kef 104ab or Calinda... just for looks... Man.... if I was in a situation where I have the choice....

Classic floorstanders like mentionned above in a blink.

I have a line on a set of Reference 3's. Waiting to hear back.

KEF can be a real pain in the a** when it comes to model numbers, and this applies here: Are they the Reference 3 or the Reference Model 3? Two very different speakers.

Reference Model 3:

Oh, excellent question. He says Reference 3, but I'll bet the are Model 3.

Waiting for pictures.

If that is the case, worth pursuing?

The ''Model'' 3 was the speaker that finally retired my 104/2's from use in my main system after 20 years:) I've used the 104/2 early single-wire model,104/2 later bi-wire model, and the 105/2's. They all sounded great, but these Model 3's were the keepers.

Are they worth pursuing? Probably not, because as soon as the word gets out, they'll either be gone long before you get there or you'll get killed in the stampede:rolleyes:

As for the newer (and very expensive!) Reference 3,I've never heard them, and would not put any effort into doing so,as my search has (finally.....) ended.
