Kenwood Basic C1 Preamplifier Restoration/Upgrade

Check all your caps for polarity. Replace the filter caps at very least or it will go boom .
 
I thought the stripe was the positive side and you were supposed to solder that side into the hole that is circled and has a + sign next to it?

I also found some stuff in my preamp that had different values that what the OP posted.. not sure if there were variations.
 
No sir the stripe is negative. Even has a negative mark on it you just have to look kind of close on some caps.
 
There could be very variations normally we replace the part with the same value as the original. That's what I do anyway.
 
Some of the parts recommended in this thread are better parts to use than the originals. That's the mod part. If you want it back stock just go by the schematics and the parts that are listed in there. I always check the ones that are on my board to make sure I have the correct values.
 
Not a problem at all I've done the same thing in the past nothing to worry about hopefully you'll be able to fix it with no trouble Just a little more time.
 
Yeah, everything is working fine. Fortunately not that many electrolytics to swap. I feel like a moron since I have recapped several units in the past with no issue, it's just been awhile and I guess my memory was wrong on the stripe.

Yes, I followed the mods... upgraded the opamps, reduced the voltage, and increased capacitance/voltage when necessary. I just chose different capacitors mostly nichicon UKL.

Yes, I finished it last week! I've been busy and havent listened to it a lot yet... just checked to make sure its working properly. I ordered parts for 4 preamps so I am going to go through them all. Next on deck is Yamaha C-40 and CX-830. Anyway, after I got done recapping them all I was going to do a little preamp shoot out and post my impressions. I started a new job and am training so my time is limited at the moment however but I have all the parts on hand!
 
Let us know when you start the new thread with the shootout ! I want to attend. Glad you got em rolling again.
 
I "lost" the transformer again, while seeking the reason for the 50Hz hum. 18V is not enough, but it does not work with 24V trans either. (The RIAA is not connected at all). I tried with two regulated 16V lab power supplies with the diodes taken off, it then works but the sound gets distorted at high volume (main amp set at very small volume). And smaller amount of hum is stille audible.
