KLH-1 Score

Hey Bakes inread somewhere that the KLH-1 stands are 10.5" tall. Is that correct? Do yours have rubber feet? I'm gonna make some.

Perhaps replace them with the same type but with some film/foil bypass capacitors, ala JBL style.

I found the rubber surrounds for the 3s at Simply Speakers iirc. They have a very slightly smaller inside diameter but the roll size was identical. The most difficult part was finding a glue that adheres rubber to polypropylene; I ended up using automotive trim adhesive.

I have noticed a bit of harshness on some midrange passages that makes me think that one or more of the caps on the 1s have drifted out of spec. Definitely looking to replace the smaller values with more modern caps and replace/bypass the large values as above. Good winter project.

The one thing I want to find is the correct replacement foam for the blankets on the mids and tweeters. I got some 1/2" foam from Parts Express that will work if I dye it black, but the surface texture is not quite right. The foams around my 3s began to perish years ago.

That front face foam blanket material is rather unique, and a very different density from the foam on the inside of the cabs. I've seen discussion on other brands of speakers where owners have tried to find suitable replacement foam. No personal experience with this, but others have suggested a material used for head liners in cars available from auto body shop. Thx for the rubber surround info, bakes.

Thanks - the foam on the 1s is still mercifully intact. Here is what the stand looks like. The center section is approximately 4 inches square and they are nine and a half inches tall. They do have rubber buttons on the bottom of the stands. The base is 12 inches square, and the platform that the speaker sits on is the same dimensions as the speaker itself. The finish on most of the stands is identical to the finish that is on the front baffle of the speaker, and the center column is the same veneer that's on the outside of the speaker.

I had the factory stands, that sounds about right. They didn't have feet: plain bottom. If they are on carpet doesn't matter. If a wood or hard floor some rubber matting would work, and rubber matting between speaker and stand might be a good idea.

I remember that stuff well. I have seen it in other applications too (not speakers) and can't remember where. It is stiffer than camping mat closed cell foam, but lighter weight perhaps. If you needed to replace it thick felt (the kind used to line arctic boots - Sorrel, La Crosse etc) or carpet would do the same thing perhaps.

An 8" length of 4x4, walnut veneer it, done. The black surfaces are probably best estimated by using Krylon fine textured black paint - pretty much identical.

Missed this post when I replied: those are the exact same stands I had. But I can not recall them having the feet. Oh well, it was 20 years ago....

I have a pair of 1's without the computer, but I have an Audio Control "The Architect" speaker optimizer. I wonder if would do they same thing as the KLH computer (which wasn't a computer just an equalizer). Home computer's didn't really exist back then.

Not quite true; a friend of mine already had a home PC at the time I bought my model 1s. He also had some of the first home PC games installed like the first PAC man and another called warlord. Then there was a surprisingly (in retrospect) well animated martials arts game where you dueled it out with an opponent - the computer.

I think the model 1 control box was "computerized" in the manner in which it adjusted the activity of the bass driver. Were it just a linear adjustment for bass a simple gain knob would have sufficed, and bass/treble adjustment had long been standard with many amps, receivers not to mention equalizers standard options for component systems.

Yep from what I can understand the ABC also monitors the drivers. Leads from the drivers plug into the speaker outputs of the amp.
