KLH-1 Score

This is kind of interesting. In my research I found this image of an A.B.C that can power a KLH-1, 2 or 3...and 4?. So it's a universal A.B.C. On the back you can see the three rows and might just be able to make out KLH1, 2 and 3. Didn't think the 4 needed an ABC?

Was the classic 5 different than the Model Five?
 
Goldjazz, I have come upon that same computer in my research, and even though I own a pair of KLH-4's, I cannot explain the ABC's function with the 4's. On the bottom, however, are what appear to be screw adjustments for all speaker models except the KLH-4. Perhaps this unit is intended to be used when operating two sets of speakers from this series simultaneously.

I believe so the classic 5 had Oak bottom black middle wrap around grill and an Oak slat on the top. It also had a area if you wanted to put in a square piece of glass on top. Kinda styled like the KLH PISTOL also Known as the CT38 if I remember the model number correctly.

Yeah I guess since you need to run your preamp through the ABC then back to the power amp this would be the only way to run more than one pair at once. Interesting that KLH built a specific unit for this issue

Ok I have attempted to draw a schematic of the crossover of the KLH-1. Now I'm basically a novice at this sort of thing, and I found this to be a pretty complex exercise so this may be riddled with errors but attached is my attempt at it. Would really appreciate if anyone who actually knows something about crossovers can take a look to see if what I've sketched makes sense.

Thanks - Very cool re the crossovers - you could go any which way with the caps, but I would likely use Solens or better in the mid and tweeter circuits as that is where you will notice the most difference IMO. Once I finish the 3s I hope to futz around with the 1s and check out the topology. If you replace the caps in place and in kind, it should be no big issue.

As far as the ABC goes, I think that the three models each had different bass boost circuitry (3s down to 40, 2s down to 38, 1s down to 30) so it is possibly the same circuit bt tweaked. The 1s have an additional button on the front. The thin wires on the back of the comuter go to the speaker terminals along with the speaker wire to complete the feedback loop.

Now I need to save up some capacitor money...

The 4s are the same speakers as the 3s, but did not come with the ABC.

That looks completely unlike the bottom or rear panel of my KLH1 ABC. I have never seen such a device before. Must be for multiple sets of different ABC speakers; again, new to me.
 
So I finally got the ABC working, tracked down a suitable power supply.

KLH-1 Listening impressions: They are superb. Smooth, laid back, warm and detailed. Capable of pin point focus of vocals off in the center. The low end is really nice, not over emphasized and boomy but kind of balanced and full.

Take a look at the graph below of the low end with and without the A.B.C. The other graphs I've done of their full range look really flat, within 5db but start to roll of in the highs. I will be looking at recapping these, perhaps the just the mids and highs.

Jantzen Silver Z caps, just did the 5MFD on the Tweeter and the 10MFD on the mids. Big suckers

Cheers. Looks like a bit of dogs breakfast as the caps are huge and I had to wrangle for space. Will prob do the other caps soon, will take a couple of pics then.
 
All this discussion on the KLH's propted me to put my 2's in rotation .I figured theyd sound excellent of my Fisher mono blocks as the last time I used them on a pair of Heathkit W4am mono blocks and they were deadly.
So hooked them up and no sound from one speaker.These have never been dismantled,drivers pulled .I'm thinking it has to be a pooched cap inside as there is zero damage to drivers or binding posts.Ill look back in the thread for a recommendation on caps used goldjazz

update...we pulled the woofer and inspected wireing and tested for open caps,all tested fine.Looked closely at the board and there was a lifted solder point on one of the caps/resoldered and they are working perfectly.
I put them on my HHscott lk-150/lc 21 tube pre and their singing beautifully.My buddy was over and couldn't believe their sound, especially considering their size.At some point I will recap them and the anologue computer..

Hi Hunter congrats on getting your 2's working again. I did open up the ABC but haven't recapped it yet. Lots of caps in there including many tiny ones. They don't seem to affect the sound from the mids and highs as there is no improvement to the mids and highs without using the ABC. I will recap it sometime soon though. Will upload when I do.
 
got a repreve from work this morning and thought to myself if the the 2's sound this good on the hhscott tube gear,ill try them on my Fisher monoblocks/400c tube pre.
well an hr of messing around later their running with the fisher gear ,these have never been on the Fishers before.Im searching for adjectives to describe just how great these speakers are ,especially for their size .The big Fishers will make any speaker sound special ,effortless detailed tone these are extremely satisfying,thats the main reason I prefer the hi quality late 50's/60's speakers,but these be more modern 1980's speakers its a total surprise.keep yur eyes peeled for these!

Awesome hunter, I bet they sound wonderful with those Fishers. I've been experimenting with my amps with my 1's. The love my warmer setup which is not tube based (Mark Levinson ML-1 preamp and Perraux 6000b mosfet power amp, with a FR-1 Mk3 MC cartridge) I had to listen at pretty low levels at night cause we have someone sleeping in the next room, the setup up is just really detailed and delicate with that strong and balanced bass. Made me think they would sound great with tubes, sounds like from your experience they will.
