KLH-1 Score

Just recapped the 100 mfd and 2 x 25 mfd caps...wow again. An even bigger improvement than just recapping the 10mfd and 5 mfd. Bass is tighter highers are crisper. They are just so lively and detailed now. Guitar strings have an insane snap to them drum slam is startling and life like. Amazing speakers really. I just put in average electolytics for the 100 and 2 x 25s now given how much an impact that change has made I may track down some good electolytics. Crossover before and afters attached, excuse the not so tidy crossover work on this job, kind of rushed it in there cause I was excited to hear it. The old caps had drifter quite a bit, meased them.

Great to hear that you've got these fully assembled and up and running. Very nice and rare speakers, indeed. Congrats. But jeepers, those Jantzen caps are ginormous! I suspect this is partially due to their overly high voltage (800V), which is probably several times the necessary rating, but I'll bet they are fine performers nonetheless. Nice job.

Yeah certainly big suckers. If anyone knows of smaller caps that are equivalently good sounding, let me know. I acutally got those caps for another project but using them here while I can. Anyone who has a pair of KLH-1's you must recap them, you probably haven't heard what they're really capable of yet

Your postings have convinced me to move that job to next on the speaker list. Glad you love them - they are quite a remarkable speaker!

Cheers Bakes. And I think there's even better performance to come. I haven't recapped the ABC yet. The uncapped ABC noticably reduces sound quality when used with the freshly capped speakers. So I'm not getting the full effect that the ABC provides (extended bass down to 30hz) in combo with the calrity just yet. Next stop is recap ABC and clean it up. Also may then go slightly better quality on the electrolytics in the speaker given the larger improvement that recap has made. Looking forward to seeing how you go, enjoy. Also if anyone has found a hi quality/reasonable price solution to making up large values (eg 25mfd and 100mfd) in PP etc caps please let me know. Certainly wont be trying to make up 100mfd with Jantzens any time soon.

Recapped the ABC now too. This has imprvoed things up another level again! So it's removed the reduction in detail seen when using the un-recapped ABC with the recapped speakers. Aslo has tightened the bass and increased the impact in the bass slam. Was listening to "Prepared" by Jill Scott with the volume up, it starts with this massive drum slam and my heart actually skipped a beat, I though I blew my amp or something such was the impact and realism. Also now the speakers are really showing up the differences in my amps. So with my Sansui Au10000 (power and pre used) I am getting the most detail but its perhaps a little shrill. With my Mark levinson ML-1 pre and the power section of the Sansui I'm getting slightly less detail but its a warmer less shrill result which I think I prefer. Also vinyl is showing up less shrill and nicer than digital.

Good job Goldjazz.
next time I go into the city for parts I will take a look at what size capacitors are needed and do my ABC as well.My motivation is not as keen as it once was as I have other deadly speakers here to use.You mention hearing some shrillness.and you prefer a warmer tone, you really should try a tube amp on those KLH's.It really doesn't matter what tube amp and tube pre I use with the speakers ,I get all the detail present in the source music ,plus just a fat ,layered 3-d tone thru and thru.Of course these punch way ubove their weight class as far as projected spatial soundfield is concerned, they just sound like a large pair of quality speaker, all that in the smaller package.

Yeah would really like to get some tubes on it. If you've recapped the speakers just playing with and without the ABC will show if its affecting the highs.

Just got an ESR/Capacitance meter. Measured some of the caps from the ABC and speakers that I pulled out. Do you know what, they actually generally measure fine for capacitance and ESR in the speakers as far as I can see. Some in the ABC are pretty off though. Check the values attached. And yest I swear the recap of the speakers also made a difference, is it just nicer caps?

cant go wrong with klh. I am really impressed with my klh-cl2's I'm starting to love these 2 ways better then I did my epicure 3.0's that I had. these things are detailed they have peerless drivers. they play pretty low and image well.

I just bought a pair of these from good will. They are in nice shape
No bass computer. Far as I can tell they will work fine without it. Well I hooked them up to my pioneer elite vsx-45tx .they sound really quiet! They are clear. I pulled a driver and mid. They are working.
These cant possibly be this power hungry! I'm guessing bad crossover caps?20191108_213023.jpg 20191108_210801.jpg 20191108_210753.jpg

They require so much power that they cant be right but sound ok. I have some el cheap o JBL speakers and some giant Yamaha 12s and neither need this kind of drive to produce a reasonable volume. 20191108_221730.jpg 20191108_221715.jpg

Rated at 87db sensitivity, the KLH-1 is not the easiest to drive speaker especially if comparing to other speakers you have.
I have no idea how the computer module fits into the equation as far as "loudness" is concerned.
The KLH-1 could very easily be power hungry where a 200w per channel amplifier would be in order.
Perhaps they are mis-wired.

I have some goofy high end sony da7100es it's a 170w per channel mid 2000s spendy reciever I think like $2000.. also scored at goodwill last year. It might push these nicer.
Usually at the levels I'm driving these my other speakers are rattling windows lol. They do sound very good.20191109_002934.jpg

Hmmmm.....not sure what's going on. These speakers are quite rare and should be restored properly although replacement drivers are not easy to locate. I was thinking mis-wired, too, but too hard to tell. I would begin with some careful disassembly to first confirm that each driver is functioning, then proceed from there.

They all work. I got yelled at confirming they were loud enough. The 100w pioneer elite didnt seem to do as good as this 130w Yamaha I'm using now. I have not hooked up the 170w sony yet. They sorta seem like they have warmed up however I dont see how that is possible. I guess my normal speakers are just alot more efficient.

Here's a shot behind one of those woofers.

Biggles
Looking at the size of the magnet I would guess these speakers are highly overdamped like Mcintoshes and require the bass boost. Is the ABC active or passive?

Its not that big. Big for house speakers but not oh my god big.20191108_221715.jpg

I can't recall if mine needed more power than usual to play loud, possibly. The ABC just lifts the bass SPL, so if all freq are also quiet I doubt that its the lack of ABC. It's a bit curious that both speakers are effected. I wonder if it's an impedence matching issue of these speakers with that amp, not sure what the nomial impedance of the speakers was but if it's not matched to the amp there may not be the most effective transfer of power. They are great speakers, yours look in good condition, definetley try to track down an ABC, I know they are so rare.
