I agree $2k is a lot, however at the end of the video he did say it’s his fav speaker at the $2k mark.
At the end of the day music makes us happy and I think it’s important to set boundaries with brands and pricing as all of our circumstances, wants, and needs are different.

I probably should have been more clear. The review was lukewarm for my needs. I can't really use another speaker of that size designed to be played on a short stand. AR-3a's currently hold that spot.
I have a set of originals, redoped. I've had new caps a couple years. Yet to update.
New 5s got a nice review.
Off topic:
New speakers are not cheap. With biggest % cost is building cabinets. There's a lot of choices at $2k. I bought (non-cabinet) Maggie 1.7i, at that price point. A different presentation.

The review linked above by Zero Fidelity seemed in line with Andrew Robinson's take on the new 5's. Hearing him describe his 8PM to 2AM listening session is exactly what I experience sometimes when I sit and listen to my Large Advents at night. Especially with the Fisher integrated tube amp. Sometimes it's not about accuracy but about the overall enjoyment. I would never pass up a good deal on a nice pair of original 5's, however there seem to be fewer and fewer available nowadays. If I can get close to or similar smiles with the new 5's and not have to recap or dope...2 grand seems like a fair price, especially when you also get the stands. I've seen those for 3-4 hundred bucks just by themselves!

I agree 100% with the 8pm to 2am, my original 5s do that for me, however I live in an apartment so, I turn the volume down around 10pm, but they still sound amazing at low volumes. My 5s make me want to turn on my scott (sometimes visa versa) and explore and enjoy for HOURS at a time.
One thing about these reviews that made me think that the new KLH 5s are an update to the old rather than just a new speaker with the same name, was how Zero said the center was locked and incredible. Whenever I listen to Hunter by Bjork I’m just absolutely blown away at how expansive the original fives can be, given the right mastering. However, with that said we need to see if there is anyone who can compare a recapped and redoped 5 to the new 5.
According to the North American Sales Rep at KLH, walnut and maple versions will be available within 90-120 days.
damn. all this talk about Scotts, Fishers, KLH's and Advents are making me want to lug about 160 lbs of speakers and amp up to the living room for a solid day of listening! I need to aerate the lawn for pete's sake!!!

As did I. The 1.7i Maggies are in my "main" system. All about soundstage and imaging. There's better bass and more detailed speakers out there, but what the Magnepans do they do well.
Funny, my main system gets maybe 5% of my listening and my lowly bedroom system gets about 90% of my time. The other 5% is Home Theater (currently with the AR-3a's in place).

Actually, you'd be surprised at the quality of speakers you can get for under $500/pair. If you don't need wood veneer or a fancy finish, that money can go a long way.

I bought a set of KEF Q150s, and they sound pretty good on my scott. Pretty good imaging just lacking the height portion of the sound stage. For instance, my KLH 5s with Bjork’s Hunter has a deep, wide and VERY tall sound stage. The KEFs are just wide, not disappointed for a sub $500 speaker.

I did watch some of zero's review and thought to myself. Why pay $2k for some speakers that are prob not as good as the originals? A quick search of local adds and a few days later I am a proud owner of klh 6 from 1967 in good working order. I like the 6's so much that I question if hifi is downgrading with the years of new tech. So I picked up a few more pairs of 50's/60's speakers! One pair has issues{another thread} the other is untested. The 6 has def been an eye opener.

Now you know why the production run was so long, virtually unchanged sonically.
I've owned both early and late production models, and prefer the early version with the epoxy mounted woofer, which goes a little deeper due to a longer excursion.
