KLH 5 2020 New VS Old

Also, the speakers are built in China. How else do you think they can get the price point down that low?
Is that true? I wouldn't be surprised if it was, pretty much everything outside of super exotic electronics is made in China (or Indonesia). But I couldn't find this information on their website.

I read that somewhere, too. If they weren't called KLH, I wouldn't mind them so much, but they ain't KLH except the tags.
Here's from the KLH website about the "fives"

I have not heard them yet but my brother just got a pair. He loves them. His mains were KEF's (LS50 wireless) and those are going up for sale according to him (he is in Boise)

Thanks for the input! I'm getting the impression they are an enjoyment outweighs pure specs type of speaker. Looking forward to hearing them. Might have to just bite it and pre order

I've not heard the new 5s. I have a pair of the vintage 5s.

There is some healthy competition between some great speakers at that 2K price point. Lot of choices.

IMO, the Magnepan 1.7i, at same price is one. Of course they aren't going to have a similar sound.

There is some outstanding competition at that price. I am intrigued by these new KLH Model 5's, but for that price I could get a decent
pair of Martin Logan electrostatics. But my reference set up right now is 2 pairs of stacked Original Large Advents....and I know the sound
characteristics of Advent and KLH are very similar. So if the new Model 5's have remained true to the characteristic sound that is improved
by today's more advanced technology.....I'm guessing I would love them.

I think 2K for a pair of really nice speakers is not mind blowing. The new JBL L100's at 4K/pair is another matter altogether.....

How would you describe the sound of the original Model 5's ?
My room is a bright 400 sf. I usually tuned the tweeter and mids down a little to cut brightness. I usually reduce treble on all speakers I use. Given that they still have prodigious pretty deep bass. I thought they were a step up from New Large Advents or Boston Accoustics A100 series 1, i prefered over the NLAs. Have more bass than my Ohm C2 with OEM woofer upgrade. ADS L880 is more refined than vintage KLH5.

KLH5 - original bass is -3db at 50 Hz but since it is acoustic suspension - they roll off at 6 db - that gives the illusion of prodigious bass. This is the same for all AS designs - the 6 db roll off.

This is a Frequency graph for an Original Advent...

I have no skin in the game - USE WHAT YOU WILL - I just like to be accurate with information, is all.
Good to know. I'm sure your right. That's a more accurate comparison. I just gave my impressions of both. And been a while since I've had NLAs. And NLAs and Orininal Advents I believe sounded different. Memory is more suggestive than objective, IMO.

So what are those graphs actually saying ?

I knew a guy once who bought his stereo gear based on oscilloscope info. He was never happy with any of it, while the rest of us enjoyed our stuff because it sounded so good. Hence my 50 year affair with KLH, particularly the Fives, Twenty Threes, Sixes, and a couple of ARs if I could afford them.

Slow roll-off plus a nice peak right before the roll-off. You can push your -3db point down a bit if you're +3db when you start rolling off!
You can also see the serious high frequency deficiencies that are common in vintage speakers. Those Advents are particularly bad, look at the ~5db cliff at 10k, but even the KLH are loosing steam around 16-17k.

Most people, especially as they get older, can't even hear frequencies at 16-17k......so real world, what does it even matter ?

I do too but it is nice to see HOW they perform, compared to others before I buy.

That is how I try to make decisions on audio equipment.

Don't get me wrong....I think measurements are important but only to a point. My final decision is made with my ears. Case in point....my Yamaha CR-2020
specs out quite a bit better than my Marantz 2252B. But using my stacked OLAs, the Marantz not only bests the CR-2020 in how it sounds with those, but my
other 2 receivers as well....a Pioneer SX-850 and a Sansui Eight. It even sounded better with that speaker match than my Sansui AU-717 integrated before I
wound up selling that. So go figure : )

Some speakers look great on a graph, but your ears may hear something totally different? I do not think purchasing a pair of original model 5's is a bad choice at all, they are a very good speaker overall. For the money it's hard to get any better IMO.
I would definitely like hear the new model 5's and judge for myself!

Would love to hear how the 5's compare with the Lintons? Nice to see an acoustic suspension speaker available.

Same here. They seem to appeal to the same target market. Similar price, similar form factor, etc. However, I much prefer the stands for the 5s; those Linton stands are a bit much for me. I've considered a set of Lintons with custom made Deer Creek Audio stands similar to those that come with the Fives, but have yet to hear either set. I would love to A/B the two.

I bought a pair of Deer Creek audio stands for my JBL 4312G's when the JBL stands were out of stock a few months ago. Don't hesitate on the Deer Creek stands. They are excellent, I probably like them a bit more than the JBL stands. Seem to be a little higher quality, especially in the area of fit and finish. And they only took a couple of days to get here!

I find the Lintons to be quite nice, I think I might like them over the long haul but rear ported speakers won't do it for me. The ones I listened to really needed to be about three to four feet out from the wall. I have a rather small listening room (11.5ft x 13ft x 8ft high) and do all of my listening from a distance of 6ft to 8ft so I guess you could say that it's midfield as opposed to near field.

I kinda gave up on the new KLH 5's. I enquired, but they had no dealers (anywhere) where I could hear them and (according to them) they were a couple of months out. I would have loved to check out their acoustic suspension sound. I listened to AR3a's when they were new on the market and I liked them but I didn't have enough amp to keep up with them when I cranked them up.

I'd love to see a new acoustic suspension speaker gain some traction in the market. It's about time:bigok:
