KLH model 5

I'm looking at a pair of KLH model 5 in the local grocery store pin up ads. The owner says they are all original and sound great, the photos show only minor scratches. $40 the pair. I've heard they're nice. Opinions?

Go get 'em right away! They are great sounding speakers IMO and I'll never sell mine. I had a nice pair but let them go and regretted it so much that I went out and bought another pair. Very nice bass response, smooth yet present midrange, perhaps somewhat rolled of highs but that's their character. Not great for loud rock but very good speakers for jazz, acoustic and pretty much everything else. The more power you have to drive them the better they sound. The caps in the crossovers should be replaced and the woofer surrounds should be re-sealed with the proper sealant (vintage AR sells it on ebay). It's not hard to do and it's well worth the effort. At that price I wouldn't even stick around reading about them, I'd go grab 'em!

I hope you aren't still reading replies.

At that price, you can flip them and make it worth your while. Or you can end up with great speakers for next to no cost and very little work. As mentioned, recap and reseal would be in order.

Either way, save these old classics from a trip to the landfill!

OK OK, I'll get em. I'm not a flipper, but I did have a pair of Sixes, and remember them as very nice back in the day.

At that price, you'd be crazy not to get them! They are the best KLH model of that era, IMO... except for the really oddball rare models that you won't ever find a pair of. They are worth between $150-$250 in most audio markets.

Run, don't walk to your car. Drive exceptionally fast, put the money in his hands, load the speakers and drive away fast because you just stole them.

Well, they're home with me for $40, one has a Peerless tweeter replacing the original one, the rest of the drivers are stock; they sound beautiful. They'll need Vintage-AR goo and I'll go through the capacitors. Now, I haven't' had the model Sixes for at least 15 years, but these seem a bit larger and sound more "there," probably due to the pair of mids in each (those mids look very much like the full range 4" ones in the KLH extension radio speakers). I'll post over in the speaker forum so I can get information on an original tweeter. But, wow, these are nice speakers.

Tweeter will be on eBay, though you may be able to find one in Barter Town Parts here. Crossover caps are garbage--replace them all. Sell the Peerless tweeter and that should recoup most of the cost of the right one.

Exactly what I was thinking about the Peerless, it will be on the 'bay as soon as I can find an original. Please see my thread in Speakers (no longer Dollars and Sense).
