Does any one know where I can buy a pair of the original looking foam grill inserts for the JBL l-100 speakers that don't cost a small fortune?????

I would be tempted to recommend just fabricating some, but if you have ever tried to cut foam perfectly straight you know what kind of a challenge you are in for. That being said I'm sure it could be done. Possibly you could make a frame that has the same shape as the foam and stretch some very stretchy grill fabric over it in a way that it gives the same waffle look without the foam that will eventually deteriorate again.

The $165 ones are gorgeous (I have a pair in chocolate brown) and well worth the money. You're not paying for the foam, you're paying for the setup time on the cutting machine, plus labor to make them, plus paint. I'd be happy to make you a pair using a long straightedge and a single edged razor blade, but I'd have to charge ya $500 for labor. :D

Well, whether they are or aren't worth the money is beside the point, since if you want a pair, that's your only option.

I've got them in black. About as close to the original as you can get. If nothing else they'll add re-sale value to the speakers.

If you want that original look, just bite the bullet and buy a pair -
there is no substitute. Otherwise - make a cloth replacement pair.

I had a pair made for my long-since sold L100s in charcoal grey by a vendor who is no longer in business.
Image shows them sitting on my L200s that I kept and modified.

I trimmed some NOS Radio Shack brand sculptured black foam for my garage sale L100's and the final result was less than perfect. Don't get me wrong, they were measured and cut correctly.. but there's just no way to get it spot on using a product designed for ANY speaker. Plus the foams keep falling off the frames! I'll keep playing games with them in the meantime.

For example:

I have no doubt that I will eventually be spending the money on the real foam grill inserts for these fine speakers.

To me that kind of money is too much for foams.Maybe if the L100s were my one and only speaker and was going to keep forever I would bite.I have a nice pair of L100s that look cool on their sides, woofers inboard with no grills on.

Check this auction # on fleabay, 271281462060. They have been around for quite a few years. The price does not include the metal logos. I have no connection with them.

What she said. I was too cheap to buy the reproductions on eBay when I had my last pair of L100s. Today, I would do it in a heartbeat, because:

(1) Clean L100s are worth a lot of money these days; $600+ easily. Compared to that value, the reproduction foam grills are a very reasonable investment.

(2) They look so good with the new grills, and their looks is a very important part of that model, in my opinion.

(3) The grills boost their resale value.

(4) Who knows how much longer they will be production? Once they're gone, they may be gone forever.

(5) Did I mention how good they look?

+1 to all those points, I also got them (maroon) and love them, they even cut one cube off for the badge. Got the stands (replica) in walnut and they look gorgeous.

I agree with everyone that the original egg-crate foam would make them "stock" and complete the look. I have a pair of early In-line L-100's and my son has a pair of L-100A's. When we were looking, the more expensive high quality foam grills on eBay were not available.

We opted for framed fabric inserts ($60.00) from a seller on eBay (no affiliation). We are very pleased with the fit and finish. He makes them in black, blue and orange.

At least they will tide you over until you decide, and look really nice. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Look at page three of the attached link to see pictures of what our set of black ones look like.

I helped my buddy do his with the eBay replacements. It was a snap and they look fantastic. We even picked up the tweeter foam rings and his L100's look MINT now ... he bought the speakers new, back in the 70's and has taken meticulous care of them over the years. When the foam grills gave way he though he was screwed but I looked around and found the eBay replacements. He was skeptical at first - it was a fair amount of cash but in the end, he gave in and is now a happy camper.

I'd go for it ...

There is a company called Foam Speaker Grills
PO Box 746
Evart MI 49631
that sells L100 grills in a few colors.
I have purchased Altec Model 19 foam from them and it was perfect.
From their site they appear to make a ton of L 100 grillss

I have 2 sets, and sold a third with those grills; there's no way to duplicate the bevels on each of those cubes unless you cut each one individually. If you look at it that way, it's a bargain. And as stated already, original look and resale is way up. Buy the grills, you won't be disappointed.
