L Cochrane push pull 6l6 amplifier debug.

Here's the product of a Canadian amplifier guru I won't name. Can you believe it has a hum which I can't get rid of? Lol. Better luck with your crazy amp!

I kind of admire the naivety of this type of work, it reminds me of how magical electronics seemed when I first learned about it. I actually feel like this kind of amplifier builder ought to be protected, somehow, because there's something special about blind confidence and enthusiasm.
Why the Hell do these builders still use point-to-point when ALL the major tube amp makers went to tagboards or turret boards 60 years ago?

You want to work on this?

Pretty sure I have a cardboard box that I've been throwing random pulled parts in that looks similar.

I won't give anyone crap about recycled chassis or messy builds. Pretty much everything I own fits at least one of those bills, but it does mostly work correctly within it's limitations. Also if we're being honest about it, some factory-built amps are pretty damn messy under the hood. Ever see the inner workings of a Pilot SA-260? It works, but it ain't pretty. I can absolutely appreciate a nice tidy amp with textbook ideal design parameters but I'm more than willing to accept something that looks a mess but performs well.

Point to point has lower capacitance between adjacent leads.. that's why all the old TV sets used it instead of turrets. Function over form, er, yeah that's it.

There's a line however that divides messy but designed, and sort of stream of consciousness abstract construction, which follows an idea but not a design.

This does neither.
It's a mess, and it doesn't work.
This is "high end" sure there's cleaner execution out there, but this is definitely 100% a high end amp. Meaning it was built in an attempt to sell it to the "high end" of the market. That's all "high end" means.
Doesn't mean high performance, doesn't mean high power. It means going after the big money spenders regardless of what you're selling. The "high end" of the market.

I like it when designers of anything have the tech or mechanic in mind. Not, "Let's just throw this thing together and the heck with maintenance."

Ya, that picture reminds me of this schematic drawing.

Ya, I've built a few. Light3s fans, inside case lighting with a big window on the side. One even had a color light organ connected to the sound card output. :beatnik:
My keyboard does that LED color wave thing. The funny thing is I never look at my keyboard (especially while playing games).

So only my family members comment on it.

Those are nice. I like the lighted keyboards. Great when gaining at night with the headphones on.

I drew out a quick schematic as wired. It looks like one of those self inverting output stages. Which is a known, low fidelity cheap console design that never sounded good. Why someone would go to the effort to completely gut an amplifier only to build a design which can't possibly sound good, it's curious.
Each layer of this onion i peel back, confirms my Initial suspicion. Anyway, I don't need to ramble on and on. Let the schematic speak for itself.
