Lafayette 250a

Well I seems so far ive done nothing but read and take notes but its been fun so far. It should be a good piece for my new listening room I am putting together since my twins are old enough to move out. LOL:banana::D:banana:

Brian (brimat66)and I had a nice visit today. He came out to the tube spa, and we looked this thing over. It's in really good shape, all except for the knobs, but we'll find something for that. Two of the EL86s are shot, and the 7199s test week on the pentode side. The AX7s all test great though, and they are Tele's.:thmbsp: I'm going to give Brian a hand with the recap on this, but I need to find some biasing instructions. Each channel has a double ganged pot labeled bias/balance. I guess I could eventually figure it out, but if anyone knows the deal, it would be a huge help. Thanks, Jay

Here she is all scrubbed up, out of the oven, and shining like a new penny. This should be a nice amp when we're done.

I have them Jaymanaa, pm me your email, and I'll send them right out to you.
I have the complete assembly manual, so if there's something else you might need, just ask and I'll try to help. :thmbsp:

Man, that's nice! I'll have to shine mine up someday.

That's my patented "In the kitchen sink with hot water and an SOS pad method". I spray all the controls full of deoxit first, then I'm very careful not to get water in the TXs while I scrub the chassis with an "almost worn out" SOS pad. After the scrubbing I blow dry with compressed air, then stick it in the oven for a few hours at 175 degrees.

Sweet Job! That looks a lot nicer than anything I've ever cleaned with a little soapy water and a towel.:thmbsp:

Make sure to give a take/impressions on what you think that amp sounds like when your finished.

I got one just like it in the back room on the pile.....it has a quad of Sylvania 6CW5/EL86. They musta came stock with Tele 12AX7's.

Yes it did, they were branded Lafayette, but had the diamonds on the bottom. FWIW, they were the ribbed variety and tested as nice and balanced as any used ones I've seen. Two of the 4 outputs were still Laf. branded as well, but are shot. The 7199s were also Laf. branded (RCAs), but very weak on the pentode side.:thumbsdn:

Hey all, Brian is an official solder slinger. He took to it like a duck to water, and is a little over half way done with his first re-cap. He just left awhile ago, and I don't think he would mind if I post a couple pics. Also, a big thanks to AK'er Fran604G for sending us a complete manual in the mail (got it today), as well as Tom Bavis for helping out with a couple 6CW5 power tubes. This project has Karma overflowing.:thmbsp:

I'll yell ya, I could not think of a better unit to learn integrateds on. As you can see by the pics, it's very roomy under the chassis. Nice simple circuit too.:thmbsp:
