Large Advent / JBL

I got my NLAs for free, but they were sewage speakers with water damage and swollen wood, my OLAs I paid $55 for needing foams and grill work but are in otherwise very good condition. That was after watching for a few years for the deal.
Normally they run between $125 to $300 here.
I like the NLAs, nice low end, smooth highs, and mids that aren't what they'd be if they were a three way but good enough. The OLAs aren't up and running yet.

Personally I wouldn't pay that much for them, but that's not saying you won't get your money's worth if you like and keep them. Just that I'd rather spend that kind of money on rare CVs.

The look to be in very good shape. No mention if they are recapped. For vinyl utility cab NLA, they are overpriced. Bullnosed, walnut veneer NLA go for $100 to 200 in Tennessee. I got my Bullnose NLA for $100, but the cabinets were rough and the woofers were not quite right.

There were thousands of these, New Advent Loudspeakers, Utility cabinet, made and although the price is a bit high, these speakers look nice, aftermarket grille cloth and such. Prices for these are all over the place. They are almost like the Dynaco A25 valued from free...folks claiming that is what they got theirs for and it's true, to 300 or so for really nice. Same for these, really nice but not the walnut veneer and priced properly for their looks as an opening number. Folks might just pay it but quick, depending on local market conditions. If you are interested, all you can do is make an offer if you don't want to go that high.

These are on PHL CL for 250 out of DE and they have grilles. not the new but original, in utility cabinet looking not so nice and NO original drivers.
I don't know if the woofs and tweets are from the later Advents or some Radio Shack pieces that fit the holes. Probably work fine, sound fine but aren't Advent sound. Pity the fool if you know what I mean.
Sorta puts those in the OPs post in perspective.

For the money we are talking I would be all over a set of DCM Time Windows but quick. Better than either of these advent sets unless you have to have advents.

^^^ This.

Advents are nice, but I can find (and have found) much better speakers for that kind of money. I've had OLA, NLA, Advent/1, Legacy II, and Baby III Advents. I still have the OLA as garage speakers, but plan on moving them out after I rebuild their replacement. Advents are great $100 speakers. They are good $150 speakers. Much over that, you can find better speakers for the same money. But I did have fun listening to the Advents and comparing them to other speakers, both vintage and modern ones.

Just curious but what would you consider at that price?

I am still buying and comparing. Recently, I almost got a pair of Infinity Quantum 3 for $200, but I was too slow in responding.

Currently, my Klipsch KG 4.5 is tops. I have about $250 in them (purchase price, Crites diaphragms, and recap). A close second is my Polk Monitor 5B ($15). After that are my KLH Model Sixes at $70. I also like my Rectilinear III at $100, but they don't work in my space. :(

I have Paradigm 5se speakers I love, but I have not done a side-by-side comparison with any other speaker to see where they rank. I like the 5se much better than some of the modern Paradigm Monitor series speakers, which I also own.

I can afford to try some of the better speakers because I wait until good deals show up and I am capable of doing basic restoration work. I am keeping my eyes open for Klipsch Fortes and Chorus speakers, but they will be at least double the $260. I want to try some infinities. I want to listen to a Polk 7 and maybe some of their other highly regarded speakers.

I’ve got KG4 without Crites mods. Maybe I should upgrade those before pushing them aside. I’d love to get Cornwalls but don’t want to put that kinda cash in.

I have heard many good things about the titanium diaphragms. My tweeters were trashed when I got them ( the domes were crushed - no idea how that happened). I was not worried because I knew replacements were available and not too expensive. They sound great, but I have no basis of comparison. I recapped them myself instead of buying the Crites Crossover.

I would love to have the space to listen to Cornwalls. Sadly, I am space limited. Most of my listening is in my office, which is 10x16, but with bookcases, shelving units, and two desks.

To avoid flooding the forum with new threads I’m going to add another option to this one.

Found a set of JBL 4408 needing a refoam. Seller asking for $120 which includes a set of small newer KLH which I have not interest in. What’s a good price point and are these any good?

Better to start a new thread with a corresponding informative title if you want anyone to read and answer your off-topic question.

If you want valuation info, you must start a new thread or else this thread will be moved. Valuation questions go in the Dollars and Sense sub-forum.

This thread is in D&S. What am I missing?
