KIMG3283.JPG I spotted these large horn speakers attached to some Shure speakers at the hockey rink I play at. They are large and it's a older rink....kinda curious on what they are. Kinda cool.

Looks to me like a pair of Altec 511s.

Yep. 511s on top of some 60s-vintage Shure Vocal Masters. Probably the Shure VA-300-S, with two 10" and four 8" in each cabinet. I've seen quite a few of those over the years. The Vocal Masters were OK for their time, but the passing of time hasn't been kind to them (almost any decent, more modern, gear has significant advantages over that type speaker arrangement)

Regards,
Gordon.

Those Vocal Masters sure bring back some memories. One of the first bands I was in had those with the matching powered mixer.

Altec made some VIR horns and VIT horns in the 90's that made 511 look like toys. 1803B multicelss were easily 8 times as big. JBL, RCA back in the 30's-50's made larger horns as does Klipsch commercial speaker division, Electrovoice, Meyer and Community Light and Sound,images.jpegUnknown.jpeg
