Latest Thorens to the stable -TD125

Good to read this appreciation for TD125s.

I took my MkII out of service quite a while back, and recently brought it out of storage to think about servicing the electronics.

I put it on the floor under a bookshelf with records. I didn't think of how vulnerable it was there till a small (wooden) box of tubes fell onto it and smashed the nice original dust cover. I was surprised at how brittle the thick 4mm acrylic was. The bits are all there, but I think I'll have to go for a replacement rather than repair. The original hinge system is still good.

Lesson learned, but I still feel a bit of a vandal.

Well the table arrived, and was well packed except for one thing... The seller did not un-install the dustcover before shipping so of course the dust cover broke at the hinges. @#%#$%#^$#

So now the conundrum, file a claim and risk losing the table, or see if the seller will make good on the dustcover. Damn! This was so unnecessary, A brand new non OEM dustcover destroyed. Do I stop and not check out the table itself, or see if everything else is in one piece, which it appears to be. I guess I will stop right here until I hear from the seller.

Disappointed,
Jim

Sucks for sure. Yeah, nothing to do at this point but just see what the seller says and go from there. :thumbsdn:

Sorry to hear about your table Jim, thats a bummer. Thanks for the great read on the tonearm, so as not to derail your thread any father I will drop you a PM tomorrow regarding the problems we have found with this arm, I am interested in your thoughts.

I hope this turns out right. Maybe the seller will make good on the dust cover and no other damage has occurred. Let's hope so.

Sorry to hear about the shipping damage. Entirely preventable.

However, best to check the entire table out so that you can present all the facts to the seller in one specific email. That way you don't "surprise" him later with more details.

Take a few deep breaths (I'm sure you've done that already), maybe a nice warming drink of your choice, and then proceed logically and methodically to check out the table's condition.

Then sleep on it (if you aren't already asleep) and figure out what you're going to say to the seller in a day or two.

Good luck!

I share your pain about your dust cover. I hope the seller will reimburse for the damage, though I must confess that it looks an odd place for a break to occur, because the hinge is the most secure place. Actually, the hinge mechanism puts pressure on the dust cover all the time via the wire spring.

Whilst looking at the damage I did to mine, I have realised that it should be easy enough to mount a new dust cover of the right size. Here in the UK I got an acrylic company to make up a cover for another larger plinth for about £30.

We shall see, I have submitted a claim, What a PITA!!

Jim

Here are some quick pics of the table as it arrived. (keep in mind these were taken with a flash, so the table presents itself better than the pic's portray. Everything operates properly, so it should make a solid foundation for a mod with a new plinth etc. The table is not cosmetically as nice as I was lead to believe, but the arm is complete and looks very nice! Shame about the dustcover though. At this point I feel I overpaid a bit for this one :^(
Regards,
Jim

That's a nice looking table, and it runs too! to bad about the damage maybe you can
fix it up. when I got mine it didn't run, I had to replace all the caps inside. I still
have a bunch of Linn parts and still thinking of building a Linn but the prices for
parts are crazy, but in mean time I'm enjoying the Thorens.

Just thinking, if you intend to make a new plinth for it, you might want to make the plinth bigger to allow for 12" arms in future. In this case, you can go for a bigger cover while you are at it.

These are good tables; I doubt if you will regret this purchase in the long term.

Already thought about it, those Long Base models are almost impossible to find!

I'm writing away from home, so can't look at my TD125, but is it not possible to replinth a standard model to become a long base?

Sorry if this is a stupid question when you look at the deck!

It will call for a slanted side on the plinth or a asymmetrical look, as the control bar will only run partway across the front.:scratch2:

Basic maintenance done, and clean up done with polished platter.
Sounds phenomenal!

I just bought another TD-125MKII, this one on a huge, beautiful "SME 2000 Plinth System" and with a SME III series tonearm.

The motor spindle wobbles!! Anyone have a good trick on how to realign it?
