i've got a fair few lava lamps, but my favourite toys along those lines are my oil wheel projectors...

i've got about 10 Optikinetics Solar 250 projectors and make my own custom oil / liquid wheels...

I bought a real nice Lava Lamp at GW and set it in my Picture Window so all my neighbors could see it and envy it . Oddly , after a year , The doggone thing is Clear now . The sun must have somehow screwed with the dye inside . Still looks cool though .

I read - before the internet exsted - that the original concept used aniline (=phenylamine), which is the 'A' in BASF of tape manufacturing fame - since aniline has just the right density.
The lava lamp effect (they didn't call it that) was even given as an experiment in an old chemstry book I have, and we tried it as school.
But aniline is poisonous, so schools would not allow that now, and that's also why it isn't used in the decorative lamps.
Aside from the fact that Wikipedia claims "it possesses the odor of rotten fish. and ignites readily, burning with a smoky flame"

Old chemistry books are great: mine tells you how to make mercury thiocyanate, and the fun you can have with that. This is why school is no fun anymore.

I believe they do but I've never been to one.Most of my Lava Lamps are older ones that I picked up here and there for Peanuts.Some are from the 60's and others 70's & 80's! A few newer ones here and there that were given to me.Other kinds of Lamps are from the same Eras as well:):thmbsp:

Bought it at Target a few years ago. Still US-made then.

I used to really want one of those plasma globe things. They seemed so cool, like something out of the Sharper Image catalog before that brand got bought by a holding company and started showing up at Walmart. They were like everything whiz-bang and fun about the 80s.
