LED in place of 6.3v #47 Bulb

One thing I've played around with is a voltage doubler and use standard automotive 12 volt LED replacements. Those have multi-segment LEDs and a built in current limiting resistor. Simple circuit with a couple diodes and caps. Power several LEDs with a small value components.
 
Here's a fun toy that does a nice job of keeping things flicker free. You could build your own, but I like the tidy package ...

This one is in a Sansui QRX-9001 where only half the lamps were replaced with LEDs. The power meters use a wheat grain bulb that's pretty much bulletproof AND is usually next best thing to impossible to get out once the glass fuses to the plastic meters over time. Those and the dial pointer get hooked in to the stock 7VAC line just before the rectifier, and the LEDs are hooked up past it. If I ever replace any of the remaining incandescents, I can just switch the power to the other side and be done with it.

I need to apologize for my misinformation. The 5050 super flex #44/47 base draws 60ma and has 3 - 20ma lamps inside and not the above stated 20-30ma total. The 3528 smd led has one 20ma lamp in it. I am still going to research and experiment with this.
