Let's mod a PL-41 !

And unless I'm mistaken about the need to enlarge the whole in the plinth to accommodate the Rega arm, you couldn't go back the stock arm if you wanted to. I've thought about it a bit myself and concluded that it's probably only for me if I find a PL-41 (or a dirt cheap Empire 208) without an arm to begin with (as is the case with Naptown Rob).
 
I am interested to see how this turns out...I had a PL-41 for a while. Sadly sold it prior to its recent rise in value. Was impressed with the build quality and that huge motor.

Im watching this thread, I lucked out and ended up with 3 PL-41's all within a week.
! near mint with a mint dustcover. 2 very good condition.
I also measured out the dimensions thinking my Rega RB300 would be perfect fit.
It is so very close just a slight enlargement of the mounting hole and it would drop right in. The only hassles would be filling in the holes where the arm que mounts and power switch/arm que lever is located.
Im surprised to hear the increase in value ! wow, I guess the word is out. The PL-41 is a pretty stellar turntable.

Man! This tonearm shopping is harder that I thought it would be...
I've realized that I'm probably going to have to up my budget slightly - but not much.
I screwed up this month's audio budget last night when I accidentally found a never-used PL-41. Check the photo of the accessories bag. Quite cheap compared with what we've seen of late.

Reflexively pulled the trigger. I'm bad that way. I figure once that one arrives it'll take the place of my current very-nice-but -the-dustcover-is-cracked stock unit.

But the plan for the surgery/experiment continues. The owner of the donor is on the road for another week, so the search for the arm patiently continues. Finnbow has been most helpful.
And I found a machinist if needed through a friend who owns a body shop.

Is budget still set at $100?

Some good arms can be had, if lucky, at that price or just north of it.

However, a budget of $200-$300 opens up lots of possibilities.
 
Personally, I have no set limit on the price of the arm. I just won't buy one unless I know I have a bolt on or a fairly simple install.

but really, you'll have to wait a while before finding an arm for that kind of money.

you just missed a grace 707 for $250 on 'gon. that is a great arm, i own and have owned it/them for some time. you DO want a nice arm for that tt.
 
I've toyed with this whole arm idea for a while. Howard, and others convinced me that the original arm is actually pretty good, when matched with suitable cartridges. Still, fascinating to watch you all bat the possibilities around.


I have relayed these recent EBay prices to the significant other, who at least thinks I'm a bit less crazy now, having paid less than $40 for my PL-41 a few years back.:D

Which cart did Howard think optimizes the PL-41 arm the best?

I was over a rather eccentric friend's house today. He has 4 (!) NIB Grace arms, & would be happy to let me have one.

He can't find them! Doesn't know what he did with them. His father bought them years ago.
 
you must HELP your friend

he is in dire need of your help. he must find these articles that are obviously cluttering up his abode.

i suggest unending help until he is liberated.

I actually agree about the arm. I wouldn't even be looking into doing this were it not for the availability of an "amputee". I may actually end up making a sow's ear out of a silk purse! The stock arm just seems to be one of those extremely simple devices that just plain works well.

As for the price thing, anytime that happens I make sure to point it out to my wife for 2 reasons:
A) To further cement my reputation as an insightful genius with an uncanny knack for making bold, clever decisions.

and
B) Assuming that A) will be ignored, to make my odd habits a bit more palatable.
