Let's mod a PL-41 !

And pbinpb57 is in for two more. It looks like we may be on target for 20 and a reduced price.

BTW, pbinpb5 provided me with an eBay link in which a guy has fabricated stainless steel thrust pads for the PL-41 for $25/plus shipping. I'm thinking stainless may be problematic if the bearing well were allowed to run dry. The end of the spindle would be shot. Also, I don't think stainless would be as quiet - but what the hell do I know?

I agree, I think running the tip of the spindle into a metal pad is begging for unnecessary wear. even if the bearing is well lubricated. My thoughts are the spindle is not hardened so which would be the sacrificial. Id rather it be a delrin disk. My thoughts are polish the spindle including the thrust tip, running the delrin pad Im doubting noise will be an issue.

Heck yeah - I consider this a place for all PL-41 lovers to put in their 2 cents on the possibilites for this humble yet wonderful table.
Plus, I have no idea how long it's gonna take for me to settle on an arm so I've invoked the "Talk amongst yourselves" clause.

Still looking for ideas on invisible plinth mods. I was pondering adding some extra wood inside the base, or maybe some vibration deadening material. Any thoughts on feet?

I was thinking about a corian plinth, a one-piece dupe of the stock version.

Well look what showed up at my house today.:scratch2:

Not our donor unit - the arm on this one is fine. But another dustcover falls victim to a shoddy shipper (can't blame the carrier on this one - it was the packing). Cracked at the right rear hinge. Pretty dirty. Looks like it spent some time in a barn.

Did the dolt ship it with platter in place?

Oh, no. The platter was lovingly removed, and placed unsecured directly on top of the dustcover, which was left in place. The speed control cover was neither removed, nor secured in place. The whole thing was then thoroughly wrapped in a single layer of bubble wrap, and placed in a too-large single ply box with and underwhelming amount of peanuts.

I'm surprised the plinth survived.

I got this as a BIN. Immediately after buying I sent the seller a message that I wanted to talk with him about my shipping concerns. He called me several days later - after he shipped it.

Rob

Been there done that...I am OVER trying to get shippers to package properly.
It's just a shame some sellers don't get it. I finally after three tries got a dustcover I can use with my PL-41 but I have scratches to try to mask.

By the way whenever you want the donor unit it's sitting in my garage of plenty! Come get it.:beatnik:

The secret is biting the bullet and paying them the extra cash to ship the cover separately. This still isn't a guarantee but at least it lessens the chance of the cover getting damaged. The box would have to be reinforced with extra cardboard if it isn't heavy wall to begin with. Otherwise it could be crushed easily.

I'm sure other people realize this and thought I would mention that the PL-50 and PL-50A are very similar to the PL-41. They do have a slightly better tonearm to begin with so trying to track down one with anti-skate wouldn't be be an issue.

The only other thing is the semi-auto feature the table adds. I didn't care for the clunk you could clearly hear at the end of a record but could easily be removed making it a full manual like the PL-41.

I gladly would've paid extra to ship the cover seperately, but the guy waited until AFTER he shipped to respond. I just think he couldn't be bothered. I'll be addressing the issue with him this weekend & hoping for some kind of resolution.
Local pick up really is the way to go....

The drag of it all is.....
I really kind of only wanted this for the dustcover!

As far as plinth mods, I've been considering applying Dynamat Extreme (or its cheaper B-Quiet clone) to the underside and sides of the wooden plinth, the thin base plate, under the top metal deck and the speed control cover, as well as some on the top of motor's brass mounting plate. BTW, I was goofing with mine the other day with a stethoscope with the drive belt removed so I could also check for noise coming through the stationary platter. The sound of the motor was barely audible (in decreasing order) on the speed control cover, wooden plinth, metal deck, bare platter, tonearm. It was not audible on top of the stock platter mat.

I had also thought of putting Dynamat under the platter, but it might mess with its balance. Also, no noise made it through the platter mat anyway (this will be even more the case with all the Dynamat elsewhere). As for feet, I was thinking of simply using some archery field points. They can be screwed in and out for leveling and will fit, both physically and aesthetically, into where the stock feet are (with slightly enlarged whole). Larger spikes would look silly, IMHO.

Update on thrust bearings. Here's the tally thus far. PM me if incorrect. Anybody else, jump on board before midnight tomorrow (Sunday). With PayPal fees, postage, sales tax at machine shop (6%), I think I best leave the price at $7 apiece, inclusive. Otherwise, I'll be paying you to take them.:scratch2:

The archery feet sounds like a good idea. What do you think of the leveling spikes that PE has to offer?

I think they're surely fine. OTOH, their size might overwhelm things from an aesthetic point of view. Also, the wood on plinth is about 1/2" thick. If you screw them in the middle of the wood panel, their spikes may protrude out past the edge of the plinth.

With the angular edges, this PE spike might look nice. But I think it would protrude.

Plus, I have bunches of arrow field tips from another hobby, archery/bowhunting.

I know this blows the budget to all hell, but what about getting that fella off ebay to do a custom dust cover?

I think the prices start at around $89, and for some large tables, go up to almost double.

But I have a suspicion that the PL-41 would be the $89 price.:scratch2:

...

This has definitely helped me in less catastrophe.

Still, a few folk take the money and run. Thank lord for keeping records and Paypal, I've not taken the brunt of the loss.

The patient has arrived.

Here is our candidate. Apparently the original owner had in fact mounted an aftermarket tonearm on it!

There's a - actually rather nice/un-noticeable - little rubber nubbin where the armrest should go. Tonearm cutout is 20mm. Plinth is in very good condition. A couple of very minor blemishes on the metal itself. No dustcover or hinges.

Now, to find a magnificent $4,900 tonearm for $37...:smoke:

Add me for one of the Delrin bearing plates, if you would please.

Now, if only someone would come up with an economical way to take the ridge off the platter and still keep it balanced....

I'm pondering that. They don't make a PL-41, per se, but there is another model that's the same dimensions, but without the holes on the side for the lid support rod.
I guess I'm now looking for dustcover hinges & the support rod, too. I'm not going to want this to be lid-less.

"what about getting that fella off ebay"

whatabout telling us who the ebay guy is with a link? there have been times when i might have used him. the guy on a'gon is kinda pricey.

I imagine they could put the holes in for you, if you give them the dimensions/location.

As per rules of AK, I can't supply a link to this seller without this ending up moved to the Dollars and Sense forum section, but here's info-

You're in for a thrust bearing. I'll be contacting you and the other participants on Monday or Tuesday as I'm supposed to be picking up them up at the machine shop at lunchtime on Monday. I'll send you a PM regarding payment details and to get your mailing address.

Regarding the platter, I've had similar thoughts but wonder if the sonics would improve much (or at all) with the ridge machined off and a Herbie's mat on it. Regarding balance, I don't know if Pioneer went to the trouble that Empire did in balancing their platter (i.e., there are no drilled holes around the rim of the platter like on the Empire.)
