Yeah bigger dust Will not stop a speaker from bottoming out. I don't think it hurts though and Miller sound knows what he is doing..

I also trust Bills judgement as I doubt he would do anything to an item he is repairing without having tested it first.
 
So my guess is this.....the original dust cap is small and inverted....in some cases I bet it hits the voice coil...

the bigger ones have no chance to do that....again, just a guess...

Voice coil, cone, and dust cover move as a single unit. Bottoming out is when the voice coil makes contact with the back of the magnet structure or reaches the limit of its range.
 
And the dust cap on the specific drivers, again, is shallow and comes in around the edge...this is my guess but it makes sense....don’t get caught up in the definition of “bottoming out” wrong choice of words....

Here’s my frankenspeaker, a Minimus 77 with a woofer from an Infinity iCar plate speaker. The tweeter pictured is from a Boston Acoustics 555x home theater speaker. I haven’t figured out how I want to mount it yet so I am running the Realistic tweeter. It sounds fine but I will be auditioning ADS 1” soft domes from some L10’s and EMITs from the iCar.

I first ran them with just the woofer swap which was an improvement. But with the Minimus 77 having just a cap for the tweeter it obviously could use a crossover. I swapped in a Micca MB42 MKlll crossover and it was much better. It sounded less muddy and more articulate. I’m leaning towards just swapping in the EMIT and iCar crossover. Although I also have crossovers from a pair of 0.3 Infinitesimals which could fit. It might be fun to see how they sound next to my 0.2 Infinitesimals and Modulus.

The goal of this project is to have a great sounding pair of box speakers for the rear of my fastback mustang. I leave the rear seat down and simply cannot cut any of the original panels. 2AE32F9A-43CA-4772-8A80-B71682CCD8D8.jpeg

I’m in the process now. Fresh out of retirement and my garage loft, my badly abused Kappa 6 and one of the free, empty cabinets I have. I spent years woodworking, building, furniture restoration and have electrical experience. Hopefully with guidance I can build a center with the donor cabinets and a couple of subs with the Kappa 6 and merry them together. I add top suspended 2” above. This will sit between my Kappa 9. These sm-82s sound much better with braced and sealed cabs..the Qe components didn't hurt none either20240310_112314.jpg
