Hello, everyone!!

Been reading quite a bit of late about the latest AI advances, and well, I am concerned.

Having read many of the Scifi authors of renown, I was at least semi-literate on how they thought this would roll out. But the degree of accuracy is rather frightening.

Here's a really troubling video on this topic -


Pay attention. I know the narrator is dry as dust, but stick it out.

I'd hear all comments on this pertinent topic. Many years ago, Elon Musk was asked "When is it too late to stop AI?"

He replied "It's already too late."

So, is Homo Sapien Sapien just a stopgap to the singularity?? Because historically, as things evolve, older life forms (think Mammoth, Saber Tooth Tiger, Giant Sloth) go bye bye.

Still waiting for his SkyNet in my area. At some point someone will time travel to take him out... sounds like a good movie plot :idea: ;)

As for AI, we are already working our asses off on making ourselves go bye bye, AI may just be another ingredient in the pot.

Maybe TikTok is already AI trying to keep us distracted. It is a weird world of constant stimulation and entertainment; what does that do to our brains not having moments of down time and contemplation? I can't cross into politics but if it isn't AI doing it then it is still a brilliant way to crush us by entertaining us to death.
Sad to admit it but it used to be far more common for us to say there was nothing on TV and go do something in the evening instead, even if it was just playing with a pet in the yard or wandering around a store. Now there is always something on TV.
 
The cat's out of the bag.
Just a matter of time before a situation like 2001's HAL 9000 happens. Self driving electric semi's around the corner medical procedures. The changes will be gradual and incremental. Little notice as it happens do to it being accepted as convenient and cheap.

Let's hope they need to keep humans around for repairs......
 
Here's ONE fear I have about AI: that it will be applied too confidently, in too many places, before it is fully capable and (mostly) free of bugs.

For example, those phone routing mazes where you're given 5 options to choose from, and what you need to talk about is not one of those 5 things? Yeah sure, sometimes the programmer is thoughtful enough to give you an "everything else" option. But too often that catch-all is not included because the programmer is so confident in his/her ability to anticipate every conceivable situation or circumstance.

No, the (relatively) crude phone routing programs we all know and love are not AI. But I believe the analogy is valid. My fear is that the creators and dispensers of AL will be so enamored of their new toy, that it will be showing up, in too many places, before it is truly ready. And in some cases it will either create new problems, or lock us into a box where we are not able to solve our own problems. AI will be dealing with issues in our lives more critical than phone routing, and there won't be a number to call and speak to a human to get things sorted out.

Read a lot of SF as a kid. What I learned if you can dream it someone will do it. Sooner or later becoming a digital download will be an option. When that happens I sure hope they have an ignore function.
 
You should be worried about AI! Hawking had a great fear...phobia about this type of electronic learning and its progression.

Check out who he had several meetings with in the way of the "big-hitter" pundits for a share session before he left this planet. There's some sort of agreement among the powers-to be, except the Chinese who refuse to join this learned group.

At my age, if it don't kill us all within the next 5 or 10 years, it ain't gonna matter to me.

'sides, , , my bet is squarely on on some super mutant virus scrubbing humanity from the planet long before A.I. ever gets the chance to.:eek:

Oh, absolutely. I mean, what could possibly go wrong, and that assuming it is humans implementing it. Reminds me of Scott Carpenter's remake of The Thing, or up a level, Brave New World. The authors do not represent original thinking, just reporting in various ways on the stream of events as observed.

Understand your personal take on "time left on the meter"...but there are future gens to consider.

And there may be more truth in your "s/m virus" as the planet becomes over populated! I've a personal take on that...has to do with macro-organisms. Another thread, eh?

Considering way things are shrinking it's not only a good way but a likely way. Technology has always enabled such efforts, cutting edge, no other purpose commands global resources.
