Let's talk about Artificial Intelligence. Scared yet?

It's only going to keep getting scarier and scarier. Had this conversation the other day with someone.. In the 80's were were excited about tech, now many wish it never made it this far when it comes to AI..... Just read an article today about colleges and schools are a little worried now, because many students are starting to turn to AI to write their papers for them now, and sadly. many times AI is doing a better job than the students are...
 
If the motivation behind the pursuit of increasingly encompassing and "advanced" use of AI is to make our lives better, then perhaps a long introspective look and following discussion into what exactly CONSTITUTES a "better" life would be in order. An easier life is not a better one. A life free of stress and strife is not necessarily a better one. Are we a happier, kinder people now than we were prior to having the technology we have currently? Will additional reliance on it make us "better," stronger, kinder, more appreciative of each other?

So, yes, I am "afraid" of AI, not so much in the "Terminator/SkyNet" it'll-kill-us-all way, but simply in the continued erosion of whatever good is in humanity.

Not simply the erosion, but the replacement. On the other hand maybe it's just evolution taking us to the stars and beyond with the rest just the price of admittance. On the big picture, I know but I'm not saying.
 
Whenever I think about AI, I also think about the very deep humanity/personhood/technology tensions played out in the Blade Runners and the book that seeded them.

It was explored to a lesser thoughtful level in Star Trek OS and TNG.
 
AI is currently being used by companies to gather human behavior patterns to deliver things such as a 'better shopping experience'.

I predict that the intel gathering will expand to other areas to develop individual profiles that then can be used *against* the individual. AI will be used to control people's behavior via positive and negative reinforcement. We will become completely compliant sheeple to our benevolent overlord leaders.

This was filmed four long years ago; that's almost a lifetime in burgeoning technology.

My girl and I talked about this less than an hour ago. She's reading "1984" for the first time and is surprised by Orwell's prescience.

I'm not. Science fiction writers from around that time period accurately predicted a lot of the innovation we live with today. A lot of the other **** we live with, too.
 
Don't mistake a fast processor, lots of code, and a gigantic look-up table for intelligence. True AI requires self-awareness, and that's not gonna happen with silicon chips. All AI at the moment is programmed pattern matching of some sort.

This is why we aren't going to have self driving cars on the open road.

And ask the Russians about thorium salt (beta emission) reactors. They were used in a lot of Soviet military equipment and got scattered all over the place when the USSR came apart. Killed a lot of people. Another great idea that turns out to have engineering complexities that render them either dangerous or essentially unworkable -- what do you do with it when it's no longer strong enough to make power but kills anyone who gets too close? For 1000 years or more.....

That's low-key kind of happening already, with the specific news you crave delivered right to your inbox, aligning with your core beliefs, ads for things you might covet, etc.
 
Pretty much everything these days weighs heavily on my mind, AI of course being one. The surveillance state monitors our every communication, when they use it to further classify us into groups, whose to say who gets targeted.
I stole a saying that I often overuse but it’s true “the disease and the cure are one in the same”. All the innovations and technology has made life easier but we aren’t as happy.
 
when I was a kid I didnt scare easy but...one evening my parents were gone and I was home alone....walking through dark parts of the house I imagined looking up and seeing the silhouette of Yul Brynner in Westworld

Being somewhat of a skeptic/pessimist, I think that AI will be used to influence our purchasing decisions as it already is and beyond. The goodness of it in our lives will be dependent on who developes it and ultimately who stands to profit from it. As to self awareness, will there be a bias toward the creator or will it exercise true free will?

When you think about how stupid the average individual is and then realize half the population is even dumber than that, it leaves open the possibility of an enhancer or a reduction in our collective intelligence and chance for survival.

With what companies can currently do with the data, just imagine what more power and more AI could do? We are already controlled to a large extent by what we see online and that is customized for each of us based on what their software thinks will keep us engaged. We each get a view of the world that is tailored just for us. If all of us start to type the same search into google the suggestions for finishing it will be different for most if not all of us. PBS's Hacking the Mind, episode 2 had some great stuff as well as Netflix's Social Dilemma. Just imagine all that amped up as programs get better and better and picking what we hear and see. I often hear people say "how can they possibly think that (insert name here) is doing a good job", I've given up on telling them that they both get different takes and information on what is going on.

I've never used TikTok but I hear it is really good at suggesting what to watch next to keep people watching. Youtube always seems clunky with "you watched a video on adjusting a carburetor so here are 200 more on that."

I'd say there is a fair chance we will destroy ourselves before AI gets real enough to get the chance to decide we should be eliminated.

Our only choice in the matter is to not to carry around or use our personal tracking devices (cell phones) and to not use the internet.
I am not influenced by influencers (human or AI) and I tend to operate above board, so I worry about other world problems, not this one.

Never will be an Alexia in this house.

I am not a fan of the car "black box" or insurance company car plug-ins that track your every driving moment but we are already there.
License plate readers don't bother me, people who break the law fear these.
Red-light cameras: awful, cause stress and accidents, fraudulent (Chicago) and generate a lot of money for the operators.

As another person mentioned, I too, have re-read 1984.
George Orwell was very prophetic.
