A good Linear tracker will give you some fine sound across the album. The simpler the design the better. The HK ST-7 senses when the stylus has moved from parallel with the groove and using its friction drive it moves to the point of least resistance and that happily is when the tracking is dead on.

Yep, this topic causes a lot of heated discussion. For the record, I own one and think it sounds great, but also own three pivot arm tables that I think sound great. I honestly think owning one is the only way to judge whether or not you like them. Like all things audio, there are good and bad examples of the technology. It just seems like the argument always comes down to one way or the other, when it's just two different ways with different sets of pluses and minuses. I also think the technology was given a bad name by a host of really cheap plastic linear tracking tables towards the end of vinyl's (1st) heyday when CD came out. I will not say one technology is better than the other, their are threads that go on and on arguing about that. But their are some really nice linear tracking tables, but perhaps its a complicated way around a problem with pivot arms that, in the end, really isn't much of a problem on the better pivot arm tables. Mine is a Mitsubishi LT-20, a solid, heavy DD linear tracker that makes great music. That's all I ask of a turntable and it delivers.
It looks better with the dust cover off, not sure why it's on here...I always take them off.

I have a linear, it's a Tecnics SL-DL1. I know it's nothing special but it's sounds great with my system. I have a rather large library of vinyl and was wondering if it was worth the money switch tt's.
Incidently, I just bought a mint condition Ry Cooder (Borderline) album today for $2
