List of capacitor coupled solid state receivers and integrated amplifiers

There are lots of additions to the list, due to more contributions and more research. To modify slightly what was posted at the top of the thread, the list is limited to two-channel, solid state, receivers and integrated amplifiers from 1975 and earlier (the cap coupled era). This means that it excludes quadraphonic receivers, tube amps, power amps, and modern gear. It also excludes gear with a dual-rail power supply that includes an AC/DC coupling switch. The best available estimate of the watt per channel rating for each device is listed in parentheses. If you have additions, deletions, or corrections to this list, please post them here. I hope some will find the list useful when you are looking for, listening to, or servicing vintage gear. Thank you!

Interesting, I thought ALL the xx1 receivers were DC output. Learned sumpin today. Strange they did it in the middle of the series, and only one model.

Now that you mention it, I think the Sansui 221, 331, and 551 are also cap coupled and should be on the list in addition to 441. I think the 661 and higher were direct coupled. Perhaps a Sansui expert can verify. Thanks.

I have the Sansui 771 looks to be direct coupled.

Looking up the schematics it looks like you can add the Pioneer SX-2500 (72) it was the top of the line above the 1500TD and 990.

The list has been updated to include the amps listed above as well as others discovered from more research.

I think it's easier to maintain the list going forward as a PDF file (attached) that can be printed out and shared. I always welcome additions, deletions, and corrections, and will update the list periodically as we get more information.

Thank you!

Great additions, thank you. Just a couple questions.

I started looking at the Nikko receivers, and it looks like the STAT-2010 and STA-4010 maybe cap coupled, but the STA-6010 and STA-8010 might be transformer coupled to the speakers.

Also, are any of the Sherwoods you listed transformed coupled to the speakers? Just want to double check, and appreciate your input.

IIRC the 1010, 2010, 2020, 4010, 4020 were cap coupled. A lot of the early models used a driver transformer to output stage, but not cap coupled and transformer not connected to speakers. STA 301, 501, 701, 6010, 8010, 9010, and 1101. (and probably some others...) 5010 and later models were direct coupled.

I was under the impression that all of the early Marantz solid state was capacitor coupled until the "DC" series came out in 1978, DC meaning "Direct Coupled."

I have two 170DCs power amps and an 1180DC integrated and each has a rear switch for Direct or capacitor coupled. It is my understanding that the Direct Coupled setting was prone to problems, and all of mine, and every one I've seen, is set to the capacitor coupled position.
Nope. Everything over 30 wpc, as well as a few under we’re direct coupled - 2245, 2270, 2275, 2325 just to name a few of the more popular ones. The DC moniker was used on a few models very late in the 70’s.

Thank you for your input, but I don't think either of those are cap coupled. Both came along a little later, in the 1976/1977 time frame.
With the Akai it wasn't until the following series the AM-2850 proudly displayed a DC emblem so I believe the AM-2850 was their first OCL design. The Realistic you can plainly see the caps in the output stage.

One to add to the list, the Rait 30-30 and 60-60 amplifier. Made in, and only ever sold in, New Zealand. Dual mono two box setup.

Came in two flavours. Black or "Wood grain ..." A very good amp. Still have, and use, the one I got in 1977.

I own a baby Marantz 2015 receiver (1973) which I had understood to be cap coupled, perhaps someone in the know could confirm? The smaller output 2010 may also be cap coupled.
