List of capacitor coupled solid state receivers and integrated amplifiers

The two Heathkits that you mention are already on the list.

Regarding the Fisher amps, can you clarify your statement? Are you saying the four amps you listed are cap coupled and everything else is not? I don't think that is the case, but if you can be more specific, that would be great, as I want the list to be as accurate as possible.

Thank you.

I see now that I was ambiguous ..... and missed a few. The specific units mentioned by model number are direct coupled. Add the 250-T, 250-TX, 400-T, and 450-T to the direct coupled list. All of the others are capacitor coupled including 100-T, 220-T, 440-T, 500-T, 550-T, 700-T, TX-50, TX-100, and TX-1000.

Fred, thanks very much for your input and clarification.

I'll delete the 250-T and 400-T from the list. I'll add the 500-T, 700-T, TX-100, and TX-1000.

I believe the 100-T is a tube unit, so leaving it off the list for now, unless there was a solid state unit with the same model number.

I didn't post that (admittedly unclear) statement but the answer is that those four listed do NOT have coupling caps at their outputs. They are quite different in their topologies, however ... for example, the 600T uses a transformer drive to its all-NPN outputs, whereas the 500TX and 800T have more modern (and conventional for their time) amplifier sections with a differential pair at the input and complementary output devices.

100-T was an error. Should be 160-T.

The 600-T (and TX-300 stand alone amplifier, also Heathkit AA-21) were basically from the RCA transistor manual from around 1962. The 600-T was sensitive to temperature and load impedance and almost broke the company with warranty claims. There were 5 versions in 1965. Later units, even with later technology, were obviously parts count reduction to reduce cost.

Not sure of any model numbers but Scott was also using capacitor coupled amplifiers around that time.

Interesting stuff about the 600-T, thank you for all the information. The 160-T was already on the list, as are a number of Scott receivers and integrated amps.

Here's the latest list, with the Fisher corrections and the Sansui 4000 added.

Fred,

Can you check to see if the Scott 384, 386, and 388 receivers were cap coupled? They are not on the list but maybe they should be.

Thank you!

Can't find anything on the 384. 386 appears to have a dual power supply but the schematic does not show detail of the power amp. 388 IS capacitor coupled and single power supply.

I'll add the 388 to the list.

I've read that the 384 might be the same design as the Scott LR-88 that was offered in kit form. Is it possible to check that one?

Finally, could you check on the Scott 636S and Scott 637S to see if they are also capacitor coupled?

Thank you! Your help is much appreciated.

636S and 637S share the same schematic and that shows they are both capacitor coupled. Cannot readily find anything on the LR-88.

I've done more research and digging, and now feel that the list of capacitor coupled receivers and integrated amplifiers is comprehensive, although it still may exclude some not commonly found models, and there may still be some errors regarding RMS power levels at 8 ohms.

There is a obviously a lot of rich vintage audio history to know and learn, and I've learned a lot assembling the list. It now includes 236 solid states stereo receivers, and 102 integrated amplifiers.

I hope some find it useful. Thank you for all your help.

Don't see the Pioneer SX-6000 on the list. Looking at the schematics looks to be cap coupled. Would be expected for that vintage.

The SX-6000 was somehow overlooked. I was able to add it to the last uploaded list while I still had editing privileges. Thank you!

Hi, I’m new here and couldn’t see any Tandberg listed here, so here goes:

Tandberg Sølvsuper 10
Tandberg Sølvsuper 11
Tandberg Sølvsuper 12
Tandberg Huldra 8
Tandberg Huldra 9
Tandberg Huldra 10
Tandberg TR-200
Tandberg TR-220
Tandberg TR-1000
Tandberg TR-1010
Tandberg TR-1020

Tandberg TR-220
Tandberg TR-1000
Tandberg TR-1010
Tandberg TR-1020

Welcome to AK and thank you for your list!

You listed 11 Tandberg models. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Sølvsuper 10 is a hybrid (valve and solid state) which excluded it from this list, and these four were already on the list:

Tandberg Sølvsuper 11 (15)
Tandberg Sølvsuper 12 (15)
Tandberg TR-1000 (35)
Tandberg TR-1010 (35)

I'll take a look at adding these six:

Tandberg Huldra 8
Tandberg Huldra 9
Tandberg Huldra 10
Tandberg TR-200
Tandberg TR-220
Tandberg TR-1020

In the mean time, if you could confirm that all six are solid state, cap coupled units that would help. It seems like I ruled out the TR-1020 before, but I might be mistaken.
