Look What I Got Out of a White Van?

Man, I bet those dogs can bark (I mean that as a compliment) I keep waiting to find something similar around here. I really want to see what hear what they will sound like with a 10-15 w/ch tube amp. Pretty dynamic would be my guess.

Shrink, don't you know ANYTHING about speakers??? Those are SpeakerMonkeys. Kinda like TrunkMonkeys, only these take care of your speakers.

Fellas, this is a milestone. 10 years ago he got rid of his rotary dial phone. 5 years ago he finally got an answering machine. 3 years ago he got a computer and internet service (still dial up). He even has an MP3 player. Now, today, after being registered for a little over a year he has made his first post in a discussion forum. Meet the man ultimately responsible for my affliction to vintage audio gear. My Dad. He probably won't post much but I'm proud. Now, Dad you can have the kids but I promise, you'll be begging me to take em back within a couple weeks. The Marants refuses to play nice with my other equipment as it suffering from seperation anxiety. It just knew the Scott 340B was going to take its place. It misses the low humidity of NY. If anyone is wondering his user name is derived from the fact that he wants my MAC 1900. Glad to have ya.

In an earlier post Billfort eluded to the possibility of the 421 reconing as a 416. Can anyone confirm or deny that with any degree of certainty?

I can confirm that it can be done. The motors are very close electro-magnetically speaking, at least according to an Altec-reconer.

this whole obsession started before you were even thought of. i went to a local electronics store and was looking at a sansui au999 and other things such as altec santana. the saleman said the 999 was to complicated and i should stick with one of those all in one units. well you know me the challenge was there i told him i'd take the amp, speakers, tc630d sony reel to reel and tuner. i have never looked back nor regretted going with the complicated. if i remember back then, there were no vans so i had to put down the rag top on my 67 carmaro, squeeze the speakers in the back seat & put the components in the trunk. i still have my original system and then some. all will be yours in time. how was this for a post?? won't ask me to do this again will you ha! ha!
 
Keep em coming Pop. Now you need to branch out into other categories. You have enough Sansui stuff you should hang out there. I thought Mom had to hold me in her lap for that trip home. Have I been misinformed all these years?

Nice score Macaltec :thmbsp: I think I got the same speakers :banana: One question, I think the drivers I have in them, are the 421 8II. They say on the back that they are a bass instrament speaker. They a metal dust cap, by puting them in this cabnet can I damage the driver by bottoming it out and also is the response screwed up because of the wrong cabnet? :scratch2:

I am probably not the best person to ask. I have found that the 421 driver was fairly common in the A7. You most likely will not do any damage whatsoever. I have been informed by a few different people that the cabinet and horn flare have more to do with the sound than the actual driver does. I was going to recone my 421's to a 416. The general consesus is that I probably will not hear much difference if any in the sound. I was kinda bummed to find the 421 drivers at first but after listening and a bit of research (mostly the listening) I'm pretty happy with them. I have some VC rub on one and will recone as a 421 instead of a 515 or 416. If I just gotta have a different driver some day I will buy one that is completely what I want instead of trying to make these into something they are not. Hope i've helped in some small way.

It was a great score. Thanks, I got them for less though. I'll keep the 421's for now. I'll start rolling different drivers after the fund recovers.

Thank you for your response Macaltac, I am so releived that the drivers will work. On the lower end they will be croosed over at about 60 Hz and a two 18" subwoofers will do the bottom end. :yes: What do you think? The other problem I have is that they came with no cross over's, just like yours, now I understand thet the horns can be ticky to properly cross over, do you think you can give some guidence in this matter? I realy doubt if I will ever come across the originals.
