Looking at a Sony STR 6055. Any advice?

Electronics Junkie. Looking for a fix
Owner says it works.

Anything in particular I should be worried about? Anything I should pay attention to etc.?

Thanks in advance. :)

It's a good receiver. Look for worn lettering on the faceplate, the on/off switch sometimes breaks, so check that out.

I've had 3 and they all sounded a bit different. One sounded great, one a little bassy/bloated, one very bassy/bloated. Probably due to aged caps.

But listen to see how it sounds to you, and these generally don't sell for a lot, so don't overpay as they aren't too rare.

Thank you guys.

It's only $40. Figured I might even get it for less. I saw a lot of people that liked it. Figured it would be something I could learn to fix up. And use for bi or tri amping. Or even just to have as a backup. For a second system. Garage system whatever. It's only a couple of $20's. Plus it does 4 ohm. So it ups my speaker choices.

I appreciate the help.

If the cosmetics are clean than buy it. Anything on the inside can be fixed, it's just a matter of how much you're willing to spend. I prefer vintage Sony receivers to the usual Marantz, Pioneer, and Kenwoods. I also like the Sansui line but I think the Sony 6055 is one of the best looking ones.

I bought an STR-6045 last year. A Millennial ahead of me in the SA check out line had it but was returning it - no workee. And it had the wood sleeve. I bought it and found both internal speaker fuses were blown. DC offset was acceptable, adjusted bias to factory et voila - perfect working order.

Not a receiver guy and beauty is in the eye of the beholder but that series of a Sony's are absolutely gorgeous.

Beautiful, well made, good sounding.- what's not to like?

Oh man it had the wood case too!!! So jealous. LOL
And yes it sure is pretty. And HEAVY. Pretty heavy? :D *groan*

I bought the 6055. I'm gonna try to see if I can upload pics here.

Beautiful. I LOVE the sound of these Sony's band bought two of them. A 7055 & minty 7045 still in it's original box.
On the 7055 I'm still waiting for it to come back from a full restore. Unfortunately, it developed a hum after being 100% recapped. Grr. "Tech" is stumped.

That in a word. SUCKS. Try different techs maybe???

And yea it's in AMAZING shape. Guy got it from a friend who's a tech. So someone took great care of it. Then probably traded it in for something else I would think. He sold it for what he paid for it. I got this, and 24 albums for $60. Not bad I'd say. Everything works. There's just a tiny bit of damage. If you look carefully you'll see it. Just a couple of gouges, and some wear on knobs.

I'm amazed at the condition. Even the Volume script is there. It all is actually. It's mint. Can't wait to get it cleaned up. There's stuff on it. It will look even better then. I have deoxit on the way from Amazon. Just got some compressed air too. I think I totally scored. If it had the case. You'd be seeing a fat old guy doing backflips!

Great price. Congratulations.

I have two.

One I bought in 1971 and after many years of many other amps/receivers, it is currently my main source of amplification and in use every day. I have to leave it on 24/7 else it starts sounding wonky.

The other I bought recently and use it for my computer audio system.

I love the way they both sound.

Be sure to leave the loudness turned on, and be sure to understand which position is 'on'.

Nice. Seems out is on huh? I think I would have left it on anyway. Thinking it was actually off. As I don't usually have it on, unless at very low volume with not enough bass. And I usually play it as loud as possible. You know right on the threshold of getting complaints. LOL

Why do you say to leave it on? I don't usually like that sound.

How do you have it hooked up to the computer? I want to use my laptop as the main source, but I need a DAC or something, because it sounds terrible. Drumrolls sound like a tick or pshhh sound. My phone is fine. It's an HTC 10. So it has like a 24 bit DAC with two amps for the speakers, and a dedicated one for the headphones too.

I really want to grab one soon. However I haven't got around to learning about them, and they are pricey too. Plus I need one for my car stereo, and am not sure if I can/should get one that I can use for both. Or buy two different ones.

The only worry I would have is the proprietary ICs used in some Sony in the Phono preamp and the tone amp. Had to search for a year to find one for my 7055

Cool. Thanks for the warning. I'm actually not even sure if I'll keep it. I am planning on getting back until LP's after not playing one for probably about 30 years. And I understand that this isn't a great receiver for that. Forget what I read about the phono whatever not being good. And isn't a low filter important? Not sure if this has that? It has a high filter switch which just seemed to attenuate the highs?

Sorry I'm a noob. It's been years since I've had the pleasure of playing with this type of gear. My last receiver was Pioneer surround sound job in the early to mid 90's

Don't worry about leaving the loudness on - any way it sounds good to you is fine. I never listen very loud.

I have PC USB out -> USB in on Schiit DAC/RCA out from DAC -> receiver.

Phono is perfectly adequate.

You can do better though for not a lot:
U-Turn Pluto < $100
Lounge LCR III for about $300 (this is the one I'd save up for)

Forget about low/high filters.

You asked for advice and mine would be to be wary of internet wisdom. Use your own ears.

Unless played regularly and recently, you will probably also want to run it awhile before making judgments.

You got a great deal.

No ICs in the 6055 IIRC. The 70x5 series was definitely a cost reduction series. Better looking than the 60x5 but damn the IF/MPX/EQ/everything PCB is a PITA to work on. Still, the outputs are complementary on the 70x5, the 60x5 were still pseudo-complementary.
