Looking at a Sony STR 6055. Any advice?

My focus is on vinyl reproduction so I am as critical of phono sections as my budget will allow. Which is not very big and getting smaller as everything is going up except my wages.

I am mostly into power/pre's with the odd integrated and this Sony STR-6045 is the only receiver I own. I don't know if it's phono stage is the same as is in an STR-6055 and I realize it's the baby of the family but I've no complaints about sound while playing records.

Good score. I have the 6055 and the 7045 which is essentially the identical unit, but carried over to fill that product line niche for the 70xx series. Sansui has been my house sound for years but I've made room and enjoy the early Sonys. I really like the sound and very well built units from these 60 and 70 series A little deoxit on the switches cleared up the static sound during switching sources. I also like the front aux input for the phone or iPod.

Thanks guys. I can't wait to get it cleaned up and running. Might take a bit. I just got a Toshiba SA-620 in, and scored a Sansui 8900 zdb from Craigs. Actually got an all Sansui setup. Receiver, EQ, Cassette, and an audio timer. I'll do a post on it all when i can. I'm without my phone for a few days unfortunately (broke it) though. So that will have to wait.

Live Dead: I hadn't even noticed that aux input. Made me look closer. I didn't notice the left/right tone controls either. I tell you. That's a very interesting receiver. I have a feeling it's gonna be with me for some time. I haven't even heard it yet, but I really like it. You can see by all the options that it was an upper end unit. I'm sure it was pricey back in the day

Crazy part is. The guy who I got it from couldn't see it at all. I can't remember what he had before it(Pioneer I think), but it was a desirable type vintage one that goes for big money. And he was crying about selling it, and saying he wants a Pioneer, or something else desireable. But it needs power, and it has to sound right etc. Which is fine, but he can't afford these. So I told him about what you all said. And suggested he think about keeping it longer. He wouldn't hear any of it. And said it couldn't hold a candle to even his modern receiver. Which he showed me. Again I said hey man you know these are more powerful than modern watts, and sound way better. Phffft It's a Sony he says as he cracks another beer. And all I'm thinking is man you have what you really want right here.

His friend who sold it to him was a tech. So he knew, and he cherry picked him a nice vintage receiver. And the dude just sold it for what he paid for it without even remotely giving it a chance. I will not make that mistake. Trust me. And I bet his friend won't be doing him a solid like that again anytime soon either. But hey. One man's junk, and all.

Ha! "Phffft it's a Sony", that's a great line.

Glad you got one in good condition. I was really surprised at how musical these units are, Sony's house sound is really nice in this era. I dig the styling too. The only funky thing as you noted is the split balance adjustment in the volume knob. Not a big deal though. I like how they lay out the selector switch between aux 1 and phono or the knob for the others. The only thing I'd like further is a pre out/amp in. The next model up has that.
Enjoy!

I just replaced the volume/balance control on my 7065 last night and am looking forward to getting it back in service. It's a lovely machine.

I agree with everything you said. The split balance adjustment in the volume knob only stinks, because you don't know where the balance is really at. I do like the split tone controls though. Those could come in handy I would think. Like if you had to place one speaker close to a wall and it increased the bass output. Or if one speaker had an issue with a bad driver or something. This would allow you to compensate a little.

Cool. Thanks for the warning. I'm actually not even sure if I'll keep it. I am planning on getting back until LP's after not playing one for probably about 30 years. And I understand that this isn't a great receiver for that. Forget what I read about the phono whatever not being good. And isn't a low filter important? Not sure if this has that? It has a high filter switch which just seemed to attenuate the highs?

Sorry I'm a noob. It's been years since I've had the pleasure of playing with this type of gear. My last receiver was Pioneer surround sound job in the early to mid 90's
Most of these receivers have pretty good phono sections.
