Looking for a budget DAC that can upsample... not finding much.

The only thing I've found so far is the Cambridge Audio Dacmagic Plus Upsample for $350 which is the max I'm willing to spend. I plan to connect my Sony DVP-S7700 via optical for CD audio but would like to upsample the standard 16/44.1 to a higher resolutions. I will also be connecting my laptop via USB and would like to be able to upsample music from it as well.

Not sure what you mean as almost every DAC out there upsamples. Maybe you mean oversanple?
 
Many of the popular mini DACs out now such as Topping, SMSL, FX Audio, Schiit don't have a interface that lets you choose a sampling rate. Was at a friends few months ago and he was upsampling CD 16/44.1 to 24/96 and I liked the difference, to me it did make CD Audio better. I don't remember what he was using to do this. Cambridge Audio Dacmagic Plus Upsampling DAC seems to be the best thing I can find to do this that doesn't cost to much. I like it cause I should be able to use it as a DAC and Preamp. I was interested in the SMSL M100, but if I ran my CD player through it via optical there is no way to choose a sample rate. From what I've read all these mini dacs in the $50 - $200 range would process CD audio via optical or coax at 16/44.1 and yes its gonna be better than the 16/44.1 DAC built in to most CD players. Now via USB I think you can change the sample rate in Windows 10 audio devices to say 24/192 then Windows will upsample it and then the SMSL M100 screen would read 192.
 
You can upsample externally before the DAC which will bypass some or all of the internal DAC upsampling, but if you don't the DAC will upsample it for you internally. Windows has a pretty bad resampler, not recommended. If you want to experiment with external upsampling you really want to use high-quality digital upsampling filters such as SoX or those in the HQ Player and use bit-perfect output to the DAC through WASAPI or ASIO.
 
I have an inexpensive DAC that upsamples. It’s the Toppong D50. It upsamples 44.1 kHz 16 bit Redbook standard 8x to 352.8 kHz. That’s through S/PDIF or USB.

There is nothing on the front panel to indicate this is happening and there is no way to change the upsaming multiplier. But it is happening because all the filters are running at 352.8 kHz.

As other posters have said, most modern DAC’s upsample. You are correct that most do not allow you to change the upsampling multiplier.

I have also found software updampling through jRiver to give me a lot of flexibility. I had a DAC that really liked 176.4 kHz input signals and sounded better when fed by jRiver at that rate as opposed to the normal 44.1 kHz sampling rate.

Don’t discount DACs that don’t allow you to select the sample rate - there are a lot of really good sounding ones out there!

I'm just gonna go with the SMSL SK10 Sanskrit 10th for now and tinker with it. Then later this summer I'll get the Cambridge Audio Dacmagic Plus Upsample. I still gotta get my music PC together and check out WASAPI yet.

Yeah, except for some boutique ones, every DAC made in the last 30 years would upsample.
Not to thread jack, but I'm going to need some education here. My Bryston DAC has an upsample button. From the owner's manual: "Press to toggle an optional upsampling mode. When engaged, the internal sample rate converter upsamples incoming 44.1kHz and 88.2 kHz digital audio to 176.4 kHZ. All 48kHz and 96kHz digital upsamples to 192kHz...The upsample feature does not affect HDMI or USB." So, if "every DAC made in the last 30 years would upsample", is Bryston just having a joke at the customer's expense?
 
There is a button on the remote for my Emotiva XDA-2 that turns the sampling rate converter on and off.
 
I guess my point is that not all dac's offer upsampling, even if they are capable of doing it. i.e., not all dac's have an upsampling button.
 
That controls ASRC. it's true not all DACs have it. It's mainly there to provide additional incoming jitter rejection. What all mainstream DACs have is an oversampling digital filter and typically user has no control on its operation, it's there and it just works. Some newer DACs allow you to choose between different filter types, but they all oversample/upsample however you want to call it.

I use a Meridian Explorer2 USB and full MQA DAC. It up samples anything below 24bit/48khz up 24bit/192kHz. I’m Using it mainly for TIDAL HI-Res streaming, FLAC CD files, and playing CDs via an external CD/DVD usb drive on PC. I am very pleased with the results. I have it powered by an Anker 13400 mAh USB 3.0 lithium ion battery power pack, bypassing the dirty computer USB power, which significantly improved the soundstage, and dynamics. I have not figured out how to use it for my Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player or if that’s even an option. It only has a USB input and one 1/8 headphone output and one 1/8 line level output.The DAC is now reasonably priced at $139, regularly $299, with a 5 year warranty

It does something, otherwise why would it be present in most DACs since the early days of digital audio?
 
Upsampling does nothing, really. The reason being a 16/44 files really information up to 20KHz. a 24/98 file has up to 45KHz of information. You do not gain anything from upsampling, especially information.
Are your replies always opposed to everything and anything most people post on AK? You seem to always aggressively try to debunk something with copy and paste claims that’s usually a bunch of unsubstantiated technical jargon.

What makes you feel your views are always correct and everyone else is foolish believing otherwise? Do your credentials, (Bachelors, Master or Doctoral degree), help validate what you profess as scientific fact? Just curious:dunno:

Botty is simply telling the truth. He's a valued, long term member of AK with 29,000+ posts. You are a recent addition with views that you like to ram down everyone's throats (MQA for example?). Views that are often polarizing and lack technical substance.

There is no value in up-sampling existing 16/44, 24/96 etc unless you have poor quality LPFs in your digital gear. The most you can get is the same performance, often it is worse. There is no more information created and depending on the SRC, information can be lost.

If you have a huge mix of digital content in various sample rates, then there can be some justification to up-sample it all if the LPFs in your D/As are optimized more for the higher Fs. That can result in lower sampling rate content not receiving the correct LP filtering it should, but again, that is only in inexpensive or poorly designed digital gear.

I see botrytis statements as outright thread crapping and usual trolling.

My opinion of MQA is from first hand listening experience. I feel MQA is the future; But unfortunately MQA's a hard pill for critics to swallow. Many audio enthusiast, equipment manufacturers, and large record companies apparently recognize the benifits of MQA by supporting or endorsing the newfound technology. I find MQA to be very pleasing to the ear and therefore openly voice my honest opinion. I feel there's an outright suppression of speech in many of these “audiophile” forums when it comes to that topic, and I’m not one to be suppressed.

Digital upsampling does do something for video and audio in my experience. The OP may only want to cost effectively enhance his audio quality and feels digital upsampling is the ticket. Not everyone listens with a slide rule and calculator and some of us may have “inexpensive or poorly designed” digital gear that may require digital upsampling to better our listening experience; Which doesn't make us any less of an audio enthusiast.

I don’t mean to offend you or any long term AK members, but by you accusing me of “ramming MQA down people’s throats” was offensive to me. I try to counteract all the unjustified negative publicity TIDAL along with MQA receives by openly voicing my opinion and enjoyment of the newly owned streaming service and the emerging technology MQA. To some readers my somewhat aggressive post may appear as crusading, advertising, or spamming, but promise you it is not. I have been attacked since day one for embracing TIDAL with MQA; Thus triggering my instinctual fight or flight responses, and my flying privileges have long been revoked.

Isn’t AK a place where people come to learn, share their audio experiences, express their joy of high fidelity music, and encourage would be audiophiles? Or is AK a place for people with condescending attitudes and/or ridiculously overpriced priced equipment to discourage those, with new ideas or that happen to be on a budget with less expensive entry level equipment, from pursuing high fidelity audio reproduction?

For this hobby and the high fidelity business to thrive we must all come together and stop the needless bickering over formats and equipment. We should enjoy any beneficial technological breakthrough that science brings us; Rather than being overly defensive and making unjust paranoid like claims towards things we may fail to fully understand.

I find it interesting that many who can turn up-sampling on a DAC on or off usually choose off. My Emotiva XDA-2 has up-sampling (SRC in Emo speak). I prefer the sound without it being up-sampled. But then, I'm no fan of MQA or ripping files to WAV either. Those are two other "things" you've been pushing. We don't agree. Don't get offended. Just lighten up on the sales pitch.

FWIW: I'm a retired BS EE, MS Comp. Sci and understand exactly what MQA, up-sampling and other technologies do. It's rather pretentious to suggest that others don't understand those very same things because we disagree with you.
