Some small independent and smaller stations can't afford the upfront cost of diesel deliver so their diesel tanks are empty. It's started to affect delivery of goods. Krogers and Meijer neither has Smart Balance margarine. Isn't in stock because of supply chain disruption. That's the one that has affected me, pretty sure there's more. A refinery in Illinois had to shut down for maintenance adding to the problem. Going to stock up on some staples just in case.

The main problem is a global shortage exacerbated by international conflicts blocking key shipping routes. The Straight of Hormones comes to mind.

Record high diesel prices here in Victoria BC today range from an average of $2.83 to just over $3.00 per liter. That's right, per liter! I'm sure glad my '96 F-150 and '03 Explorer are gasaholics.

Plain old gasoline is getting $$$ in the lower 48, too! I'm looking to break out the old bicycle.

Considering most margarine taste like crap I'll take Smart Balance.

Bought a couple of jugs of oil and a couple of filters for the Maverick just in case oil goes up. It's one of those thing you'll use anyway.

There was a dispute between a major truck stop entity and claimed failure of railroad supply. Not sure if this was driven by a financial disagreement or breach of contract.
 
$80 to top off my 5/8 full Dodge diesel this morning.
We ran out to the tribal nations of northern San Diego county. Fuel was $1 gallon less than here in town, or locally (+ $8.00 gal), due to no state taxes in tribal lands.
Cigarettes are less spendy there as well (Sarges thing, and why we went out there).
 
In addition to the price of fuel and increased transportation costs being passed onto the consumer in addition to supply chain issues which also contributes to prices, almost anything petroleum based will likely increase in price.

Consumer items manufactured from plastic.

Building material such as paint, caulk, adhesives, plastic laminates and flooring, and shingles, for example

There is a lot plastic and vinyl used in the automotive industry.

And the list goes on...

Can't wait to see what the last two quarter will look like! I'm staying with friends in CA and diesel is $8 / gal! Their lawn guy just doubled their rate and the local Ralphs is getting low on many items. I shipped a 12x12x12 box the other day that weighed a whole 1.5 pounds. UPS wanted $67, Fedex wanted $48. Went to the post office and it was $28. Counter person said that's likely to jump this week. Looks like the Golden (Shower) Age is truly upon us.

Yes there is more. So it was wise to say that. If you complained in previous diesel spikes then at least you are consistent.
And you were right to not conflate diesel and gas until you did. We are generally older but the age range here is just that, so there are younger people who did not witness enough to have any perspective.
These are not record high gas prices. Adjusted for inflation, not even close, but 2022 was so long ago that no one apparently remembers that all time high or the 40 year high inflation.
As for diesel, we have an excess supply in production but things like the Jones Act make it extremely profitable for the gulf diesel refiners to export diesel that would otherwise not be needed. The world needs diesel and will pay for it.
If you live in California, and I did from the 1950s until 2015, you just need to look in a mirror or think about what happened and did not happen in California over the last 50 plus years which is what California wanted.
Lastly, the commodity futures market distortion is playing a big part in this which affects prices in the actual markets.
 
When I was a kid, 2 of the things we didn’t have was an abundance of food.

That’s how you fight off rising prices. Buy it before prices go up. Bought all beef hot dogs 7 years ago, 99 cent store, still eating those things.
And you’ll have to forgive us for the dust on the freezers. We live in the high desert. Wind and sand combined make ungodly amounts of dust. These are out in the sun room. After 18 years we gave up trying to keep them clean.

Oh yeah, the other thing we didn’t have? Really cool Sansui amps! :banana:
But I really could get behind some cheap smokes.

There's no way to respond to this without getting political. I'll just say we haven't seen the worst of it yet.
