Luxman R-117 and 4ohm speakers?

Yes, its safe all the way to 2ohm's according to the specs. Also my dad has run his R-117 with 4ohm speakers since 1990

I looked at the specs, but they only show peak values per 20ms. There is no actual wattage output for 4ohms and 2ohms that is more or less constant in the specs that I could see anyway. That is why I posted this question.
For instance I know the specs clearly say 160w into 8ohm, but what about the rest, not the peak values? (4 and 2 ohms)

Ive an original 1990 Luxman product guide that shows it can push 2ohm loads but there are no specs. considering the 160 wpc rating is more like 200wpc i'd say about about 230-250wpc in 4ohms:scratch2:

Another Luxman R 117 owner told me that any universal remote would work, as long as you get the right code for it from the internet. I am not sure if I would want to shell out $30, when I can get a $7 remote locally. Correct me if I am wrong.

Sonix, I am not a fan of the AR90 or any AR speakers for that matter. They don't sound good enough for me to accept the compromise of a 4 ohm rating. To get the best out of 4 ohm rated speakers requires an amp that can double down power from 8 to 4 and then again from 4 to 2 ohm. While the R-117 has loads of dynamic headroom, this is not the same as RMS, which IMO is a much better measure of power potential. That being said, the R-117 is one of the better amps in this regard but it is a receiver so you will always have to keep an eye on the situation.

I'm curious what the 2 ohm rms output rating of this receiver would be, or the 4 ohm rating even. I'm guessing that it would be over 200 for 4 ohm, and maybe approaching 300 for 2 ohm. Maybe not though.

On this, agree with Sam.
The R-117 can indeed handle a nominal 4 ohm load. I've used one with Acoustat 33, which got down below 1 ohm occasionaly, and it held up just fine.

The receiver does get quite warm, even after the bias has been adjusted to manufacturers specs. It seems to sound really good though. I don't really like the bass reproduction of these speakers. Probably because the woofers on the bottom, face into the sides and oppose each other sonically.
I tried my Au 9500 and it did good on on low and mid volumes, but when it came to higher volumes it started distorting slightly, so didn't run it to long.
Over all I find Ar 90 very balanced in the highs and the mids, but the lows just don't sound that good to me. I think these speakers need at least 250w per channel true RMS to bring out the best in them. I am not sure what the RMS output of the speakers is at 4 and 2 ohms. There are specs for instanteneous burst of power in the manual only.
