Just received the case from the gentleman on eBay. Absolutely stunning piece. The fit and finish was superb and arrived perfectly packaged. I tried to upload some photos of it with my 4100 installed but the files were too large. Would be happy to share them to an email or text them to you if you like.

I know we've kicked around this around for a long time, and I've totally enjoyed chatting with each and every one of you folks about this Receiver.

Many thoughts, like maybe the 4100 should not have even come with a Wood Case.

Other Macs never did, and usually many others like Marantz didn't come in box with Wooden Case, that was optional.

Sort of like my pair of new MC-2105's, and immediately bought the Wood Panlock Cases for both, and in they went. For 20 straight years.

Then I took them out to clean one day, detail the works, went over the Amps-rack first, and threw the Amps back in to enjoy nude while I went over the Walnut Cases.

They looked pretty good nude. More modern.

Take that a bit further in McIntosh time, and take a peek at an Amp like the MC-352. What a beautiful Amp! I always wanted one.

And a first that I've ever seen with a recessed Face Plate.
Might investigate this one further.

Well, I took a peek, and see they come in a number of finishes. Sadly, one couldn't click the various finishes to see whay they look like. They are a bit pricey.

Are these solid wood Cases, or veneered MDF?

Funny that while browsing, what do I see is the very first audio system I ever owned back around 1970 or so, Panasonic with the wonderbar scan tuning. Had the 8 Track deck to go with.

Hi,
Some other questions I'd like asking, does the Top Panel appear to be one piece, or two?

Can you tell us more about the wood case, like how does the unit attach to the case? Similar to like the Ebay model, held with one screw to the underside of Chassis?

Or is there also further attachment, like for the 4 Feet as well?

Does the seller state what type of finish is applied? (edit, I see you mention oil rubbed)


Anything else you can add is appreciated, thanks!

Hard to tell, but I think top is 2 pieces, can’t imagine using a 15” wide single piece of walnut. He matched the grain really well. It is designed to attach using that center screw AND longer 4 screws for the feet. One thing I did learn was that bottom plate on the 4100 is pretty thin, I recommend going light on the torque, but w 5 screws it is secure.
Finish might be lightly stained, then some sort of beeswax oil blend and rubbed. Just what l like. Too many of these guys use polyurethane or some top coat … to me, that is just wrong.

I did earlier contact David, the etsy seller, he replied very quickly and did confirm that the top panel of the case is made from 2 pieces.

All I can further say is that if you seemed to have had a hard time determining whether the top panel is 1 piece or 2, then it sounds like a mighty fine job was done on joining the parts and trying to match such.

I imagine highly figured panels would be problematic. And ultra expensive as well.

This might've been the deal with the 3 piece case from Audio Classics, that such is almost unnoticeable, but then again, samples may vary from one to the next. From the pics I've seen of the AC Cases, the use of 2 panels seemed quite evident-obvious to me.

I initially said that the price for your case seemed high, but I didn't take into account that the shipping of this case is included in the price..

Shipping is very expensive today. AC quoted me $80 shipping for the 3 panel 4100 Case! I'm sure they pack well, but $80 skins seemed pretty steep.

From his Ad, it seems like there's quite a nice selection of woods to choose from also.
Sure, we all know Walnut is the default for such audio gear, but other woods could really hold their own and have their own unique beauty.

Once I bought 2 Modulus Quantum Bass Guitars, and on the same day! 4 and 5 string, the 4 string was custom ordered by me, Lambswool Quilt Maple Top on a highly figured Swamp Ash Body, Walnut Center Stripes, Quilt Maple Headstock Laminate, Phenolic fretted fingerboard with marker dots, all gold hardware, EMG Pickups. Honeyburst Amber Tint finish

Took 2 weeks to make to my specs.

The other Bass was a 5 string they (Roselle Music in St Charles) had hanging on the wall. Quilt-Burl Maple Top on a solid Alder Body, Gold Hardware, Cocobolo Fretted Fretboard with no Marker Dots, again, EMG Pickups. Has a darker-deeper Honeyburst Tint finish, the 2 Basses were like "Brothers". LOL

I walked with both Basses with Cases that day, for $5K That was 1997-1998. Sure, they loved me! LOL

Like I once walked into a Chicago Vintage Drum Show, 2000, and walked out with these beauties. Had $5K cash in pocket all $100's, and only dropped $3500 for this mint set. No Cymbals included but all else including the Cannister Throne and full compliment of Barrett's own Humes and Berg Cases.

Yeah, these were Barrett Deems's This is an endorser set, very rare, he was an endorser for years with Slingerland.

According to Etsy and the seller, the 4100 Case in Walnut is $475. But I believe shipping is included in the price.
I assume tax must also be added.

Dependent upon woods chosen, the price of this case does vary. You'll see that if you click upon the various woods offered in the Ad I'll link to below.

This doesn't seem out of line, and actually very close to the same price Audio Classics is asking for their 3 side Case when you factor their Taxes and Shipping Charges added.

According to Ducati2, he stated that the Case is attached by not only one screw at the center bottom of Chassis, but also by 4 more screws which attach the Stock Plastic Feet.

In the pics shown, you''ll perhaps note that there are 2 screw holes shown at each bottom corner besides one central hole.

Was this done because of different versions of the 4100 possibly had different foot mounting points? I myself do not know?

I am not sure if these longer screws are included with the Case? I'm getting the impression that they are.

What I wish I could see, is the Cases in other Woods that David has for the 4100 Case.

I've seem to notice difficulty with such communication on this etsy site, worse than ebay, to find how to contact a seller and ask questions-etc.

Possibly I could write him again, give him my email addy, and he can forward more images to me personally. If we can do this, I would happily try posting such images here to share.

Yes, I see they mention some woods costing more than the Walnut Case, and I'd sure like to see them. The extra additional cost may be worth it.

But the walnut case he shows looks beautiful, I note a waterfall effect on the side panels, and would hope such attention is paid to all cases made.

As far as I can see, Etsy is a totally **** platform that sucks for selling and buying goods. really lacks.

Good evening to all. I'm new to the AK forum, but I can probably answer most of the questions in this thread. On the Etsy shop site in question, there's a "Contact" link under the owner's picture in the top right corner of the home page, where you can make any inquiries. He usually responds in a timely manner.
Regarding the queries I see above:
(1) All of the vintage hi-fi cabinets made to date have been walnut. No surprise there since most 70's cabinets offered were almost always walnut. Photos of cabinets in cherry, mahogany, maple, oak, and hickory are in the plan, when walnut business slows down a bit.
(2) All vintage hi-fi cabinets and 19" racks available from this shop are 100% solid hardwood, and the side/top/side is one continuous plank, yielding the aformentioned waterfall effect. I think it's unique in this space, and looks pretty nice.
(3) The MAC 4100 cabinet employs all five bottom mounting positions, including use of longer screws through the feet, and the fifth, center screw.
(4) The four extra holes that markd51 noticed on the bottom of the cabinet are actually threaded and contain set screws to allow "micro-adjustments" of vertical positioning of the unit within the cabinet.
(5) Shipping is indeed included in the advertised prices.
(6) Cabinets/cases for various vintage hi-fi devices are being added to this site's selection as specific requests are received. Offerings to date can be seen in the "Vintage Hi-Fi Collection" section. I have it on good authority that there are near-term plans for WC-10, WC-22, WC-42, and WC-43 cabinets for wide swath of Marantz gear.
(7) Etsy is not a perfect platform for sure (especially the fees), but I've found it easier to use on a laptop/pc than the mobile app. There will eventually be a full scope website for this fledgling shop.

As for me (splinter61), I hope to become a useful contributor on AK and will certainly be paying attention to other members' thoughts and experiences.

Wow! Welcome to the forum, it's a lovely place!

Thank you for sharing this information about the wood cases.

Thinking about this set screw height adjustment feature you mention, I gather such was required because with this particular case design with incorporating a recessed face plate, the inside dimensions of the case had to be larger. Thus there was/is what one might call "slop" within the case. That the case is not a "glove tight fit".

This to me sounds very well thought out that the Receiver Case-Chassis can be micro leveled-adjusted in height within the wood case for a perfect cosmetic fit.
