Macbook Pro -> USB -> C47, nothing happens?

To play through the Macbook speaker, set Output Encoding to None.
JRiver app must be closed and then reopen for the change to take effect when switch from None to other mode.

Thanks, but mine does not work, C47 USB does not show up on the laptop.
Exactly, your problem I have seen from time to time here often results in the hardware being replaced.

The only thing I would venture to try is to not necessarily do a USB Audio "update" but rather reload the USB software into the C47 again.
You'll need a windows computer to do it though.
If you can't see the device at all though, then you won't be able to reload the software.

It would be interesting to put a powered hub in between the computer and the C47, but can't see it would make any difference, and I don't believe what I read about it. The Computer wont be powering the USB input on the C47, it will be powered by the C47 itself, makes no sense at all to have the computer power it.

OR, take it to a dealer and see what they can make of it....

Talked to Ryan at Audio Classics. In addition to the USB issue, I mentioned a very intermittent issue with the MC section.

Based on that, Ryan said he will send me another C47 (after a checkout) and upon arrival, I can send my current C47 back - no disruption in use.

That service couldn't be better. So thanks to Ryan and AC.

Excellent, best result all round.
I would say they know there's no point in wasting time on it....

I received the replacement C47 yesterday (Wed. 9/9/20) and got it installed. My original C47 was also shipped yesterday back to AC. (I made the exchange at the local UPS store.)

With the old C47, my Mac computer could not find the C47 when connected via USB, so I could not use the USB connection for the C47 DAC playback from the computer. Also, getting the digital optical link from the Mac computer to work on the C47 took some messing around: you had to start the playback on the computer, then switch the C47 input to the optical input (no sound), then switch to any other input and then back to the optical input and then you got sound.

When connected to the Mac computer, the replacement C47 USB showed up immediately on the Mac Computer (in the Audio-Midi Utility and int he Qobuz app). Also, the optical connection worked correctly without the switching around stuff. I could switch between the two at will with no issues.

So now it works like it should for USB and optical. I listened for a couple of hours and it sounds as good as the returned unit with no problems (so far).

I noted that the returned C47 showed firmware version 1.03 while the replacement C47 shows firmware version 1.04.

Anyway, now I can move on with my little project to get a Roon endpoint box (as a digital source for the C47) and Roon server set up. I'll want to get an endpoint (or bridge) box that provides digital to the C47 via either or any of the coax, optical or USB connections.

Awesome keep us updated. I just don't have the guts to send my Preamp and Integrated from SC to NY. The deal you got was incredible as there was no risk at all. Audio Classics is a great company.

I do not own a PC (only Apple Macs) so I think that means I'm not able to upgrade the firmware myself and there seems to be a shortage of McIntosh repair shops in my area that I would trust to do a firmware update. Plus, I was not sure if firmware was the issue, there may be another cause for the problem I had. So it needed to go back to AC.

And just to be clear, I bought the original C47 from AC in February so this was a warranty return. I would not expect this level of service for an item not purchased from AC or outside of their warranty.

Also, AC just happened to have another C47 in stock that is identical to mine so they were able to make a swap (resulting in only a couple hours of down time vs a couple weeks). Otherwise, I would have had to wait for them to fix mine and return it.

Another listening session last night (mostly records) and all is good. Case closed.

Be careful updating your firmware via Windows. I crashed my MA9000 once doing this.
I had the same problems with my C47 i had before.....

Yes, I bricked my C48 too, don't use windows parallels!!
But the good thing is all these McIntosh units have the ability to reload the boot-file so you can get it running again and repeat the update.

I wouldn't worry about the firmware update, its not going to make it sound any better, if its working, just leave it.

I don't plan to change it. Just saying that my replacement C47, which works correctly with the USB and optical inputs, has a newer version of firmware than my returned C47 with which no USB connection could be made - the reason for this thread.

I don't believe that is the issue, whatever the case may be you need to be able to see the device, if the computer can't see it, all bets are off anything will solve the issue.
