Magic Eye

I have a little Webcor reel to reel with the magic eye. When I get the volume up to a decent level, the lighted sides of the eye have overlapped quite a bit. Can this damage the tube?

Don't know about the tube, but I'd be more worried the equipment. I had a little amp w/ a magic eye on it and when they overlapped it meant it was clipping.

no, won't hurt a thing. That overlap function is usually used for record levels to tell you that the level is too high. Can do the same thing in playback.

NONE of those "Eye tubes" had long lives...Back in the day, that wasn't a Big Deal, except for maybe having to purchase a $2 or 3 Tube every other year..Now, since they're no no longer made, you may have to modify a 1629 military eye tube for use.

The magic eye tube is on the ragged edge now after hours of use. It makes small metallic tings and flutters wildly. can I just pull it from the circuit or will that mess it the rest of the circuit up.

It probably won't hurt anything, but usually when eye tubes fail, they get dim. if its indicating strange things, its probably telling you about a problem in the unit somewhere.
