Magnavox 8802 visits Kegger

Wrap some nice wood around it, paint it with Hammerite and move the RCA's I'd say is
a nice touch an fine idea, but I'd leave the fuse holder and power cord where they are
just protrude them through that wood side, should look elegant "countersunk" in there,
pretty easy to drill a couple holes in the wood and no extra parts to move either then...:yes:
(depending on the wood thickness that fuse holder could be flush and not even "seen")

You remember the power button I did on the amp with the wood front panel/sides an my
"Minwax Brazilian Rosewood Oil and Hammerite it" coming through looked pretty sweet....
The way that hole on my power button sloped in turned out quite nice, do that on that side
I think would look better then even moving things to the back plus no re-solder work to boot.
(should look like a pretty clean setup done that way)

I like the cleaner look with them on the back; are there noise issues rerouting those wires for the power I should be concerned with?

Yep, everything has a place, all the power stuff is to that side an should be kept
in that area so as not to interfere with the audio section on the other side there.

I wasn't sure where that one might have come from, there's I think 5 of those
quad mono 6V6 amp chassis here, that one had the nicest "looking" chassis.. :thmbsp:

Andy : I picked up this piece of plywood for nuthin if you want it.It has a nice grain on both sides,bout 6"-8" wide and 3 feet or so in length. Birch ?

Well, not really, but it is a close second...
Heck I even have stuff from old speaker cabs and consoles that's pretty sharp.

OK, I finally rolled this amp out and my Almarro A205 6BQ5 SEP amp back in. Initial impressions after a single listen of Kenny Burrell's "Midnight Blue" is that the Almarro may have a slightly bigger bottom and maybe mid (I'll have to volume match a bit better), but the 8802 definitely is "airier" or crisper with sweeter highs. the drums definitely have a sharper edge on the 8802 and I think I like that. The mids really are very nice on both and that's just fine by me.

Kegger wants to bring over the other amp he built with this circuit on the chassis he pictured a few posts back, and once he does, we can have a more in depth review. I''m curious as what the extra feedback on his new build will do to the the mids and highs on that one. :scratch2:

I think that's the amp we got to here at our CRAC meet last Nov.
Has Sansui 1000 iron if IIRC. Very smooth mids and highs, a great performer, for the short session I had. Bass felt bloated that night on all the amps, my take that is.

Not the amp with the wood front that was at the Ohio gig, but the other silver/grey console pull he posted.
(also not the sansui 1000A iron amp either, that was the smaller EL84 amp with some other sansui iron in ohio)

OK, got ambitious and moved the fuse and power cord off the side to the back and she's doing fine. I'm still thinking about moving the inputs to the rear between the speaker outputs, but would have to run fairly long lines up to the connections. I'm a bit hesitant because of that. I do want to widen them as the spacing is classic tight vintage and not wide enough for these nice Canare cables I picked up.

But a nice wooden wrap is definitely in the works!!!

I installed new RCAs on the back last night, but am getting some hum over 12:00 on the preamp; it was dead silent. I'm going to swap in some better shielded leads today so hopefully that will quiet her back down.

So, I can just adjust the two cathode resistors with an otherwise stock 8802 (assuming I already split from the single cathode resistor to two for each pair) and drop 6K6's right in? I don't really want to do a major overhaul of the pre section just yet, just curious to see what 6K6's would sound like in the stock circuit.

Here's a bit of an update as she's sporting new tubage these days. I picked up a sleeve of Amperex Holland Bugle Boy 6BL8s and some ST shaped 6K6Gs so now she's living large with the big bottles

And I'm loving it!!
