Magnavox Console speaker's repair or replace

Whew there's variations of specialty gouging everywhere you look...

At the fabric store they had "speaker grill cloth" $19.99 a yard. Same black polyester fabric a aisle over different labeling $6.99 a yard...
 
The cloth I used on my Bozaks was some clearance stuff I added to an order to get free shipping. I forget what they sold it as, but its a loose weave silver-grey color that works perfectly fine for speakers.
 
I've been filling and sanding for the last couple days and the cabinets were finally ready for staining today...

I think the stain came out pretty good nice and even... as usual progress pictures...

The magnavox console speaker cabinets are getting there the stain took well...
 
polyurethane is such a pain if it runs... So I do the top front and sides first... That way any runs or drips will end up on the bottom side... I also wipe the bottom edges off as I finish the sides...

These Speaker Cabinets are really coming out well... :)

First coat of polyurethane is on now you can clearly see the underlying wood grain patterns...
 
Looking good. Wipe on poly is easy to use. You can thin out regular poly and wipe it on as well.
No runs, no mess. Spar varnish brushes on smoother, but is very glossy.
Earlier this year I built a kitchen table with a 1 1/2" thick maple top and used wipe on poly. It came out great. If you want a deeper more 3D look of the grain, sand between coats.

Thanks for the tips... I've never used a wipe on poly before... I just know that I hate sanding out runs... Regular paint thinner to thin the poly to wipe on?

I always sand between coats so any surface imperfections or dust spots don't get bigger...
 
I use mineral spirits. It works with both oil and water based. Try 10% first on a piece of scrap. Then adjust from there. You do want to use cloth that isn't going to leave bits of itself in the finish. I dont remember what I ordered last time, but it was for wiping on poly.

I don't like water based poly, I've never had what I would call good results...

I guess that a old t-shirt or some cheese cloth would be lint free enough...
 
Okay I have my back speaker panels cut... This is another area that I am not really so sure about...

This is what I came up with for the back of the speakers I don't know how well this will work...

The connections go in the large circle inset the smaller holes are for air movement...

Any suggestions???

these things were close to an open baffle design. Possible it will work best with no back at all on it.

I agree. You could try it as is and then start removing wood to make the back more open. Keep going as long as the results are getting better. How thick is the back? Too thin is bad, it will flex like crazy.
 
5/8" thick back... Shouldn't be a drum...

I don't know how the cabinet was on the original I assume it was pretty open...

I just want to keep the cats and kids from playing with it inside...
 
Okay I got my head straight and realized I was probably messing up bad if I didn't include the second tweeter...

So I dug out my hole saws and cut the openings... It's a good thing you can't see the opening once the grill screen is on...

I finished covering the backs and installed all the drivers... Vintage 50's magnavox speakers...

Anyway I finished covering the backs and installed all the driver's and am giving them a real test drive...

I've finally gotten the magnavox console speaker's in their new homes... And am giving them a...

The hair on my forearms stood up when I put on The Ghost of Johnny Cash The Sound of Silence...

My Wife said that they sound good... And She hardly ever comments on my projects... Of course I was blasting the stereo so she couldn't not hear me...:):beatnik:
