Magnavox console value?

I ran across a Maggie console today with, what appeared to be, a 196 amp inside. Plugged it in and it works. Price is $70... Should I snag it? Would be my first tube anything...

Well, I remember when they were free curside finds and five bucks at yard sales...
But for what you're getting, 70 bucks is money well spent.
Magnavox amps always sound nice to my ears and are a breaze to update into stand alone use.

So much of it depends on your local market. The fact that you know it is working certainly helps. Here in Pittsburgh those tend to be freecycle items. I went as high as $35 for a Stromberg-Carlson.

I don't care if you gonna throw rocks at me, but it's worth it only if you can gut it and easily get rid of the cabinet. There, I said it. :yikes:

Obviously, it depends on your market, if his is $0-$35 and mine is $50-$400 for the same stuff! If I see a working tubed unit for $100 or less, I always call. I can usually negotiate down on the price a bit, then sell off the furniture for twenty bucks after pulling the electronics. This usually means my end cost is $40-$60 for a nice tube amp and extra tubes out of the pre...

Is that the 6BQ5 single ended? I have the 197....I think my 175 with the 6V6 sounds smoother. My 197 seems a little bit strident...but maybe it is me.
