Marantz 1040

how i read it ....
put in incorrect lamp and did something wrong and maybe blew a fuse .then noticed glue around the caps so assumed it was a problem then installed new ones backwards and blew the rectifier . all fairly simple to fix if i read it correctly .. pics will surely help here .

Down load a schematic or service manual and you will note that one positive lead and one negative lead of the big caps are tied together at the center ground connection.

positive wires for the positive rail -- negative wires for the negative rail. You can't connect the negative wires to a positive capacitor lead.
Put them in exactly how I took them out atleast I think I did

Down load a schematic or service manual and you will note that one positive lead and one negative lead of the big caps are tied together at the center ground connection.[/QUOTE Each cap had wires on one lead so i taped them together and put them back together. Not sure if maybe one of them was other way around now that you saying this

Ok caps did leak out of a bulge on the base and not to mention the smoke. Here are the pics of it now. I'm really hoping I can save this situation

Red line ----- Should be the positive capacitor lead
Green line ---- Should be the negative capacitor lead with white wires attached.

Avionic is correct. The big caps should have the negative of one cap connected to the positive of the other. That leaves one positive for the red wires and one negative for the white wires. Getting one backward will do some significant damage.

You have some cooked rectifier diodes in the pic.

Do you own a digital multimeter? If not Id buy one. They are often the
first line of defense in troubleshooting.

Yes I do have a meter. I am finding most of the power supply components testing bad. Was thinking to just change out everything on power supply board along with the caps. Would you think that'd be the way to go.

Yeah I do. But more importantly you need to determine what actually went wrong.

Otherwise if you replace all these parts and fire it up youll likely just kill everything
you just replaced.

Do you know how to read basic schematic diagram symbols? If so Id recommend
double checking your work with the PS caps. As was suggested if you accidentally
wired them into the amp incorrectly it would explain why things happened as they
did.

Found a transistor on power supply board also shorting between 2 pins
Remove from circuit and retest.. Which transistor?

Duh.. only one transistor..:D

Seems like you guys are right in that i might have wired one cap backwards. Avionic on this forum saw my pics and explained it to me.

There is one transistor jusr behind the rectifier diodes on the power supply. That and also 2 x 2,2k resistor are not reading 2,2k.
